hi guys,i got a few question about steering rack/gearbox wear and tear. how to keep out steering rack and gearbox in good condition, to avoid it from leaking? is the way we drive got something to do with it?

Keep within the stipulated schedule for oil change.
Do regular checks, repair the small things before it becomes a system failure.
Keep your fingers crossed, touch a lot of wood and a bit of prayer would not hurt.
You'll be fine.

went to my mech and change the transmission oil yesterday. got a small leak but nothing serious. for the time being i need to regularly check the transmission oil, planning to repair the leak next month. with the gearbox condition, is i advisable to drive the car daily?

Minor leak is fine. Might be due to overfill or pan gasket was not sealed properly. But anything that leaks is not good in long term. Do check occasionally and try to fix it as soon as you can.

When you change the oil pan, replace all the screws. If I'm not mistaken, there are 27 screws all in to secure the pan.

thanks for the advise wingzee, will do. i hate leaking oil in my car :(

consoglieri,
replace the screws? i dont think my mech change it yesterday... why need to change?

Some sifus said that when you remove the screws, the thread might be spoilt and won't be effective in tightening the pan. Some mechanics say, if it's not damaged, can be reused. It's up to your discretion bro. For me, I replaced the screws. It might be more cost effective to source the items from supplier then bring it to the workshop to replace.

Any idea how much does the screws cost? I think in some cases the leak might be caused by loose screws.

IIRC, it's RM10 per piece. From Bavarian Auto.

And you changed all of them? Mine have 22 screws for the pan gasket. :stupid:

is it possible to get brand new steering rack?

i have bad experience with recond parts.. i rather repair it. but the thing is, mech usually refuse to repair it, they will strongly recommend to change to recond parts

Only some of them as the rest the mech said could be reused. Btw, it's foc compliment from the workshop as they have excess of the screws.
