It happened out of the blue... 1 second all was well, suddenly my gear shift indicator lights (the one next to the gear shift to show which gear the car is in la!) went berzerk! When I'm in P, there's nothing! When I'm in D, the light's at S! When I'm in S, the 2 AND P lights are on! Like that how ah? HELP! :dunno: Anyone experienced this before?

It's quite common for auto cars to have that problem aint it ? But duno whether to ur extent or not..lol

it could be ur circuit problem ? have it diagnosed..wan me to intro u to me mech ? =P

If I am not mistaken, the bulb or light mounted on the gear shift is just one bulb.
When you shift the gear, the bulb will moved along with the gearshift.
Numerous windows with trasparent with window and legend will
show or indicate what position you are shifted to.

From your discription, it look like your bulb holder is dislodged
from its base.

Jeff,

Small problem lar. My auto gear indicator NO lights at all.hehe :D Stay frosty dude.

i have exactly the same problem......i paid RM400 for a new cover because my older one was badly scratched, and 2 months later, the light doesn't follow the gear. there was a crack sound just before that happened. didn't show at P, and would show D when in N, etc, etc. and then suddenly it stopped moving with the gear alltogether.

i sent it back to the accessory shop and the guy took it out, manhandled it, and then it worked. now again, its out of gear alignment a little, but still moves. Still doesn't show clearly on P.

apparently the plastic bulb holder broke .......i dun know what the accessory guy did, but he basically shoved it back into place trial and error style. he also wasn't sure what he was doing. was afraid he was going to screw up my gear cos' he was shoving my gear up and down for 20 minutes to test the movement afterward.

ultimate driving machine my ass! these little screw-ups piss me off and make owning a beamer a painful liability rather than a driving pleasure.

on my e36, 318i.

when i change gears, there's an indicator at the gears itself...but nothing on my dashboard, is this normal? all my previous cars, would normally show what gear the car is in, right on the dashboard.

anyone can just confirm for me?

That's what I figured cos when I move the movable panels, the light also moves. Can this be a DIY job? I think the problem is how to dismantle the panelling to access the bulb...

Help!

Should be an indicator somewhere in the instrument binnacle... if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks guys, because there is a small area for a light on the dashboard, in between the rpm and speedometer, so was wondering what is supposed to show there. I thought the gear change light would show there, but i guess not..so the mystery deepens...
