Hi..Ive got a 2004 520i E60... i noticed that below 80kph the gear keeps changing quite frequently.. like 2 or 3 times a sec... (i think)... for example if im cruising at 60kph, not accelerating.. jz maintaining... the RPM needle keeps "pulsing" between 1500 to 1700.. up and down up and down non stop.. my guess is its changing gears... but you cant feel it.. the car jz goes along smooth. Is this normal? Also, having a fuel consumption of about 8.5km/L isit normal for a 520?Thanks so much.

Fuel consumption looks normal in city driving.

For the gear change, you may want to check out www.populargarage.com.my in Desa Pandan just off MRR2. I think it could be the transmission mapping. A remap will cost abt RM900. Your car will feel smoother.

whats a transmission adaptation

Transmission adaptation is a process where the previous transmission learning data is cleared off the transmission's memory. Meaning to say, the car will re-adapt to your driving patterns. At the same time, technicians will also have to ensure that the transmission has the correct shifting points

Hi MSport,
Where did you do the transmission adaptation and cost?
AutoBav did mine under warranty, but problem came back after a week or two. I think they just cleared the transmission memory. So much for adaptive transmission. Hope this is not the case for you.
I had to send my car to Popular Garage to get a remap and now it's much smoother.

Hey Toosoon,

I did mine at Auto Bavaria. They charged me RM90 for the adaptation. Just got my car back yesterday and will monitor the gears closely for a week or two :0

After more monitoring, i realize that when the gearbox is cold...i.e. just start engine..the car tends to be unable to decide which gears to choose from below 80kph, sometimes in face it jerks quite violently, like changing to 2nd then releasing to 3rd then back to 2nd.

Also i took the car for a spin in genting, and on the way down the car automatically used low gear for engine braking but halfway down the hill i got a "TRANSMISSION FAULT, possible reduction in acceleration" And i realized the car was stuck in gear 3 and would not shift up or down. Stop and restarted engine and all went back to normal... why does it do that?

Anyone have this problem? ThankS
