Here I would like to share with you about my experience (E39, 528) on the transmission. It is an expensive experience, so I hope it would benefit all of you, especially those just about to get a BMW and intend to change gear oil. .Got mine a few months ago, like any "smart" guy in town, my first action is change all oils (gear, brake, engine, you name it...)After a few months, I have this problem, the engine will slack or slipping when crusing on RPM1500, yes you will ask why running on 1500 rpm? that is the speed when you are on gear 4 or 5 in KL/PJ traffic when running 60-100 KM/H mostly, the car rpm will drop from 1500 to 1200 and then back to 1500 again, this will keep happening every few seconds, unless you floor to high rpm/speed. This problem also not happening when you switch to S/M mode. After consult many mechanics and specialist, as usual you will hear all kind of different opinions (because everyone is uniques, that is the beauty of human being, there are never the same, that is why corporate management comes out with Managing people training..heheh). Even so call Expert in town will not be able to identify what is the cause, yes included the sifu in Sapura Auto..). The computer Diagnosis will not be able to detect this kind of mechanical fault. One of the E60 owners also experience the similar symptom but his fixed with complete change of ECU, and lucky his car is under warranty. E60 could have this problem when the ECU failed to provide a good oxygen ratio mixture, and the fault will eventually detected by Computer/GT1.Finally I met one of the Gearbox specialist in town, who repair/recond gearbox more than other service car, it is true no joke, his shop pstacked with more than a few hundred gearboxes, he convinces me that no charges if the problem not solved, and he said 110% torque converter. Now the interesting part: Oil Change. This topics has been discussed thousand of times on forum whether one should change oil or not, though BMW said Life time, and most said life time = 100,000KM. According to this Gearbox sifu, if you never change the gear oil before, and if the mileage has been over 70K/100K km mileage, than you might not want to change it, or if you do change, be prepared for some problem, the reason is the new gear oil with fresh additives will act like a cleaning agents to eat up all the dirt inside the gearbox/TC, and if the TC/Gearbox clutches condition is not good anymore due to never change oil over 100,000 KM, then this new reaction will accelerate the already worn up parts, and cause the failures, but if you have been changing every 30-40K, then it is good and you should keep doing it. But if you never change and will not want to change, then just drive until the gearbox is kaput, that is why BMW said lifetime, by the time you hit 150,000KM, you are expected to replace a new gearbox, simple!I have the privileage to see the TC being cut into half and see what is exactly went wrong inside, but this sifu is not happy, and insist I do a complete Gearbox service, meaning to dismantle complete everything and do a good cleaning. There he found a few more clutch plates eaten up and require replacement. Believe it or not, the time it takes from dismantle, services, change parts, assemble back and all done within 2.5 hours, right in front of my eyes. Why the problem not happening when i switch to M/S, it is because the locking system by-passed the TC, and straight into the gearbox, that is why you get more immediate torque for overtaking, but it is not best practice for normal drive as it place lockinng burden on the gearbox rather than TC, with more fuel consumption and also which eventually worn up your clutch plates inside gearbox faster. A recond/used gearbox will cost you RM8-10K, even then you do not know what is the condition, so get your gearbox serviced every 100,000KM will probably extend the life time for another 10 years. Hopefully my painful experience is benefiting you.

thanks for the heartbreaking info, but how much it cost for you to get the problem solved??? on top of that what sort of waranty is given?? sorry for asking a lot but in return for your info 1 starbuck latte on me cost me very curious.

Brand new TC will be around RM3K, recond one will be half of that, servicing Gearbox (all labor cost), if no part change, could be around Rm1K, Gear oil ZF 11 liters @RM60/liter. So you can do the math. Warranty is 12 months on all his parts change.

Complete gearbox rebuild with everything NEW will be like RM8K and 3 years warantty, that is better than buying a used/recond gearbox from the market cost almost same yet condition unknown. Now, the latte is mine.. hehehe

thanks for the info, hope it benefits all e39 owners out there. latte?? no problem, worth it in everyway, buy u when icu. cheers!!

Zank,

Great to hear that you hv your problems solved. From your posting, good to do gear oil change service before it hits 70k or 100k?

bro zank,

from what i understand, a complete rebuild will only have 70% of new parts, cant be 100% all new parts. if 100% all new parts, its a new gearbox in other words. am i right?

bro thx for the info, i think i am also a 'smart' guy u have mentioned....RM8k...ouch.....do let u know where to do it since he has done a good job ;)

Bro,

Post the workshop add & tel. Can he do Gbox overhaul in a day? Normally I change my E36 gear oil every 20k & gear oil filter every 40k. Its been my daily drive for the almost past 3 yrs. For my E39 I was told by some not to change when I mention that there is slight jerk at low speed. However being a fussy guy when come to car, I did change the gear oil & filter. The gear oil is damn black. After that there is no jerk & now my car feel smoother. Plan to change again in 40k. For me nothing last forever. Only that will make it last longer & perform better if u regularly maintain it.

Thanks for sharing!:top:

Changed mine at 85k km and after 2 yrs no prob at all. Changed another one at 75k km and after almost 2 yrs no prob at all. Plan to change it every 50k km.

Yes, rebuilt can not be 100% new, the only part they use back is the gearbox case (housing), everything else is new, that is what he told me with warranty 3 years.

Just a small correction, I do not mean that if you only change gear oil after 100K mileage, your gearbox will have problem. I know many of you have infact getting better performance after gear oil change, it is very much depend on your luck and also your gearbox condition, I suppose there is no other option but to change the gear oil sometime, and hopefully you don't get like my situation, but if you do, then you know why/what is happening.

If you can afford to have the gearbox complete serviced and cleaned every 100K, that will be good, the labor cost of complete Stripped/cleaned/serviced is probably less than RM1K, gear oil is around RM650, that is not a bad investment and it will probably keep the gearbox life longer. The reason why they can do it fast because stripping/Servicing the gearbox for them is like having TT..heheh.. while other shop might encouter gearbox once in while.

The shop name is MSCOPE in Batucave, pls pm me if you need more details. I am sure some of you already know this shop anyway. He claims to be the Sole Agent for ZF Gearbox parts in SEA. Hope this help

Hi Zank, thanks for the sharing. Looks like I have a similar problem like yours. When I cruise my E39 auto in 5th gear at about 90 to 120kmh, the engine would be lugging when the RPM gets lower than 1900 to 2000. I have to manually shift the gear to Sport mode or tap the accelerator to get the gear to downshift to 4th gear to get the lugging away. None of my mechanic told me it is the TC problem. May want to obtain opinion from Mscope. Can you PM me their number, thanks.
