bro, the aux pump is a known problem with the E46/325i. I have the same problem about 1 year back. It happen while I was overtaking some cars. White smoke seen at the rear when it happen. (ATF on hot exhaust cause the white smoke). Manage to limp about 60 KM back to workshop. Jack up car and found ATF fluid at the GB.

Drain the sump and luckily found no metal filing in the remaining oil. Cause of leak was due to the brass bushing failing at the hydraulic aux pump.

change the aux pump for RM1500 (new). Total cost about RM2000 for ATF and labour. Did not do overhaul the GB as the shop confirm that the GB is OK after inspection.

Paid some extra for the GB mounting when it was found damaged. I believed that the cause of the bushing of the Aux Pump wearing off prematurely was due to the failure of the GB mounting.

Thanks for your reply. Jarance

but that workshop person, told me cannot use totally, not sure he got lie to me or not.

another option he gave to me.
1) change oil pump
2) change full set gear box services kit
something like overhaul, too many parts word, i am not familiar with that.
RM 3650.00

But no Warranty, he said problem will come again.

kisu, when the aux pump fail, were you driving the car?

What did you do when the aux pump fail. Did you stop the car and get it towed to workshop or you drive the car until it cannot moved anymore.

yes, for overhaul, the GB, the cost is about 3K plus. There are many workshop who overhaul GB and they give warranty. Try asking M-Scope at Batu caves.

Jarance, when the GB fail, i was in Highway,i slow move the car to road side, and turn off and on the engine again.
then i read the manual book, about the logo of gearbox fail, then i drive the workshop, when driving no have any error light come out, just feel that some sound from bottom... Drive around 15KM to 20KM reach workshop.

btw, my location is at bukit mertajam, penang.
they not willing to give warranty for the oeverhaul. ( he said take 2 weeks time to do it )
they push to change recon 1

The fact that you can drive to the workshop when the aux pump fail show that the GB is still working. Based on my experience, when the bushing get worn out, the hydraulic oil which is pressurised will escape out rather than back to the oil sump. This means any metal filling will be purge out. However, to drive the car without ATF will result in metal filling contaminate the GB and will damage the GB.

If budget is a constraint, just ask the shop to change the aux pump. Inspect the GB for any contaminant. If there are no contaminant, proceed to change the aux pump only. Take the risk. (I have done that after the workshop told me when they remove the aux pump). However, if they do find contaminant, then it is better to do the overhaul.

Recon GB are just GB that are broken. The workshop just change all the parts based on the repair kit. Take note the aux pump might be old for recon GB.

try to get another opinion from another workshop.

Dear bro Jarance, when you mention the aux pump failure on E46/325i, what is the symptom from the car that you get prior to seeing white smoke? Could you elaborate further? Also, which workshop did you go to get the aux pump changed?

Actually, there is no warning. No leak on the floor. Nothing. It just failed when I floor down max when overtaking about 5 cars. Then suddenly I see white smoke at the rear. At first, I thought my engine blew a gasket but it was the fume created when the ATF fluid was splashing on the exhaust pipe.

I did it in Klang. A shop called Hi-tech located off Jalan Goh Hock Huat.

Dear bro Jarance, do you have the part number for this aux pump? I could not find it in the parts catalog? For info, i sometimes do see some white smoke emiting from my car during traffic standstill, is this caused by the ATF dripping on the exhaust from a leaking aux pump?

I have ask Auto Bavaria before in Jalan Meru before and they do have spare part in stock.

No sure about the smoke fume without seeing the car. It would be better to jack up the car and check the source of the oil leak. Engine oil also can cause white smoke when it touch the exhaust.

by looking at the source, (front-under engine or middle-gearbox) will tell you clearly what is the problem.

If the oil is from the middle, you can feel the oil viscosity. If it light, it is ATF. DO you have any oil stain on the floor where you park the car. Sometime oil leak can also come from power steering as well.

bro Jarance
i have ask 2 workshop butterworth and bukit mertajam area. they advise the change the recon GB.

Recon GB means GB which broken, the repair or overhaul, then sell it as recon? right?

what you means the Aux Pump maybe will older that Recon GB?

may i know aux pump is which part of the GB? >< sorry i am noob ab this.

Recon GB are usually GB which are broken. Usually, you got problem with your GB. You go to the shop with a GB problem. The shop say GB got problem and recommend recon GB. The installed the GB for you and you pay for the recon GB and labour charge. OK, do you take back your old GB or you "give" it to them. Chances are you will "give" them the GB. Guess what do they do with your GB. They will open it and change whatever is broken or worn out. After repair, they will wait for the next customer. So that means they only change what is broken or worn out. If the aux pump is OK, then they will not change it. So you might have an old original pump in the GB.

The aux pump is also known as the hydraulic pump for the GB. It is located after the torque converter. It is a positive displacement pump. If you look at the picture above, you will see the item that is circle in blue. remove the cover will access the aux pump.

Dear Jarance, there is no oil leak from under the car, front or middle section, only sees occasionally some white smoke during standstill, i think i will need to reinspect the underside again. Which comes back to the question about changing the aux pump, how long did it took to change your pump at the workshop? What was the cost for the torque converter for your case? Tks alot for your feedback.

Do a inspection again from the underside. Better confirm it ASAP for a peace of mind.

Changing the aux pump takes about 2 days. It involved removing the whole GB, draining of ATF oil etc.
Once the GB is removed, the torque converter is then removed from the GB. The aux pump can be removed when the pump housing cover is removed.
It is recommend that you change the filter and ATF and oil seal as well.

You seldom need to change the torque converter unless the sleeve is found to be damaged. As for my GB, after the aux pump was replaced and reassembled, there was a minute leak when the ATF was refill. The workshop traced the cause of the leak to the Torque Converter sleeve. It was worn out. The sleeve was damaged due to the misalignment when the GB mounting was damaged. I got the TC for RM900 second hand from chop shop.
