Final Drive

Morning all.... couldn't sleep... Anyone can point me to some literature on Final Drives?Anybody can advice me on the impact and consequences on the FD ratios for E36 318, 320 325 on autosUnderstand that if taller ratios then acceleration is better let say use 318 FD(4.45) with a 320/325 engine the acceleration is better, rpm higher but on highway the fuel consumption increases due to higher rpm for faster speed? Correct ah?Is there a equilibrium on FC, FD and speed for a 320/325 engines?How the availability of FD here locally?cheers.

here's the what I know.

My car E30 M20B25
Max torque: 222NM @ 43000
Max Bhp on paper : 170 @ 5800rpm

but on wheel...its only 140bhp nia.

Geaxbox : Getrag 240.

tried rear diffs with

4.10 LSD = wow!!! but no top speed.
3.73 LSD= very good..a bit faster at higher rpms
3.25 LSD= 110kmh only revving at 2200rpm. Top speed..well guess la.

Now with the same engine...running on Getrag 242 Doggy leg

running on 3.25 LSD ...mahai!!!! 110kmh the revs is at 3400rpm.

But the joy of driving!!!!???? PRICELESS!!!!

Oh yeah...just realized that I have a M20 Getrag 260 stashed under my stairs.

as for E36 M50 engines Vanos and Non Vanos.

here's the numbers.


M50B25 Non Vanos 192bhp@6000rpm, max torque is 245NM@4700rpm

M50B25 Vanos 192bhp@5900 rpm , max torque 250@4200rpm.

get a manual tranny...that wan , ask Teejay.

hmmm.... i c, i c... so that means if wan top speed then must go for shorter ratios, so to relate to that from that 4.10 sure makan minyak when on highway travel if the need for speed is there. I guess I am more or less on the right track.

wah, a 3.25 LSD can do 110kmh at 2200 rpm??? Like that full thank can go to penang then to jb then back to KL .. hehehhe. Pickup good ah?

most BMWs (the ones with more than 2.5L) have top speed limited at 155mph or 250km/h so that means any non-modified 330 can overtake me easily after I hit my top speed.

The 260getrag is not for sale. But as for the rear diff... 32.5??? aiya...I throw as besi buruk. For..u?? No problem. still a lot lying on chop shop floor la.

i have a 3.15 diff but for e30..NOT SO NEW.. but cheap..non LSD.
