I had the opportunity to drive my friend's 2005 BMW 318 up to Genting with him recently. The BMW had no problem climbing the 1st part of the hill. But after the 2nd police checkpoint, here is what I think of the car. The car struggles to climb the hill. This is actually my first time driving the 2nd part of Genting hill.I was distracted by the 'underpowered' car. That's why I keep accelerate, and when there's a corner I did not brake which actually cause the tyre to screech. The reason being is that I'm afraid if I brake when it comes to the corner (the speed decrease), and I will then need more power to accelerate back. Bad idea! For those sifu sifu that had the experience to drive your previous BMW up the hill, what is your technique?1) like what i did?2) keep accelerate all the way, and brake when there's a corner and accelerate again?3) maintain speed (not accelerate trying to get your speed as high as possible), and brake at corner. Not used to driving a 'underpower' car. when i drive my 325, i had no problem. so need to learn the basic of uphill driving technique. HELP!

usually ill stay at certain known rpm's which provide the best powerband.. u have to know ur car's engine and at which rpm does it provide the best power first..

this may not relatively good coz basically u r straining ur engine at higher rpm.. but for me, its better to stay at that certain rpm rather than slow down and accelerate more, as i feel it strains the engine more..

i assume u are using paddle shift cause u ''control'' the rpm which u are staying in?

so u stay at a certain rpm... do u brake when a corner is up? or maintain same speed throughout the bends and straights? or maintain speed and brake at corner? a bit in details, taikor? thx

Bro, did you play around with the gear (upshift/downshift) or it was 'D' all the way up?

Nope. Just D all the way.

How would you suggest to drive the car apart from playing with the gears? Are u all recommending I should change to fully manual mode? Brake when turn in corner? Accelerate etc. can enlighten in depth. thanks.

i climbed bukit tinggi once with my fully loaded 1.7 stream..i manually shift the gears from low gear onwards..it worked for me..

The manual mode is available , so please used it my friend

D is mostly used for relaxed or normal driving. Going up a steep climb, you are exerting extra load/pressure/stress to the gearbox as a whole.

From experience, going up Genting, with some incline reaching up to 30 degrees at some corners/stretches, would be advisable to manually shift the gears. I do. Shifting into low gears would channel the appropriate amount of power or traction needed to complete the climb. Not just Genting, but same goes to the climb towards the Menora tunnel (NKVE, north bound after Jelapang or vise versa from Kuala Kangsar), I would manually shift gears.

I'm no sifu nor an expert, but that's how I drive.

Oh I also shift gears when I feel like having a bit of fun on a flat road......:65:

Main thing is, need to enjoy the ride bro!

yea play with the gear bro...as low gear for up hill n the top gear is for distance...

Why didn't I have any problem? Got some consumption problem going up Genting though :)

Drop the gears mate.

first of all, im surely not a taikor, but ive been driving wira a/b 1.3 that seriously lacks power, so somehow i learned that surviving skill. yes, maintain using steptronic, or perhaps using ur 2/3/4 in ur automtic transmission, ill stay at certain gear for the best powerband it could provide, i do brake, but making sure that the rpm maintains at the certain number, hence lots of shifting ups and downs. and most of the time using the engine to brake..

safe ya breakshoe also ;P

the best you could do to bring the 1.8 up the hill with less resistance is to switch off the air-cond and enjoy the natural air ....
