Feedback on Beisan Vanos seals replacement

Last week a fellow member replaced his e46 325i double vanos seals with Beisan's. I tagged along to see how it was done and it wasn't an easy job taking out all the relevant items leading to removing the double vanos and vice versa. What surprised both of us was when the engine cover was opened, the cam shalf was totally out of alignment (about 7 degree out) and sure enough, the orginal vanos seals were harden resulting the IN and OUT vanos to be loose. The complete job took about 4 hours. According to our fellow member, his car now is very responsive and powerful. Hopefully he and the rest who had replaced their vanos seals will give us their feedback and comments. I will be replacing my vanos seals tomorrow morning.

When the vanos unit is being dismantled, we noticed that both vanos pistons were loose and o-rings were hard and brittle.

There is no way the vanos can work properly with that kind of condition.

After changing the vanos kit, we tested the car and there was obvious improvement in the low end torque.

However, Beisan recommended 3++ km for the seals to run in. So, will post the update as soon as I have clock the mileage.

Chief, how to see tell/see the inlet cams are in advance position? I can't quite tell the difference of the two pics above. Appreciate if you could advise. Thanks.

Yes, bro bmw7833 is correct. I did mine (replaced with Beisan seals) this morning and got a shock of my life. My inlet camshaft is out by almost one full height of the alu bar!!! No wonder my consumption was high at 11.6L/100km (city) and 10.6L/100km (outstation). After replacement of seals, took a test drive and immediately felt improvement and smooth for low end torque. I also met another member at the workshop who had his seals replaced last week for his e39 528i single vanos. He mentioned same improvement for low end torque plus he is now getting 9.2L/100km city driving.

Same price for single & double as the amount of work involved is the same.

I have to further clarify that I also replaced other items (2 x water hoses underneath the inlet manifold, pressure test for leaks, re-aligned camshalf timing, gear box mountings).

If you were to just go and replace the vanos seals, I think the RM250 pricing is NOT applicable.

yes there is. Advisable no to DIY if not familiar. It like doing a top overhaul
