A message: TRANS FAILSAFE PROG. just appeared on my E39 just today. Can someone please tell me what this message is all about. Has anyone got this experience before and would like to share your experience with me. TQ

you can drive, but drive slowly to your mech/workshop. If not, get a proper towtruck (flatbed preferred) and get your transmission checked. Good luck bro.

bro,
Yes, I experienced this before. The Owner's Manual stated the following,

Automatic transmission*
Electronic transmission control module
If the indicator lamp comes on and/or if the message "TRANS. FAILSAFE PROG" appears in the Check Control* display panel, this indicates a malfunction in the transmission control system. Bring the vehicle to a stop, select the "Park" position, apply the parking brake and shut the engine off (ignition key position 0). Restart the engine after a few seconds. If the indicator lamp goes out again after a few seconds, the normal transmission functions have been restored. You may continue to drive as usual. If the indicator lamp does not go out, you can move the selector lever to all positions. However, the vehicle will now only drive forward with limited gear selection. You should respond by avoiding extreme engine loads and referring the problem to the nearest BMW center

Do you experience the lost of power? Your car is unable to engage 1st gear and 5th gear & the DSC light comes on?
Follow the instructions stated above. If everything returns to normal, then you are lucky. If not, you need to change the ABS Module.

p/s: you are still able to drive the car but go slow and avoid heavy loads as the car is running on limited gears!

Ouch!!! Bummer n sigh. Good luck bro... hoping it would be minor.

it happened to me before too, sent it to mech and detected 2 faults through GT1, can't really recall what were the faults. During than, was told the worst case scenario is a gearbox rebuild/replacement. However, advice to do a flush that cost me I think RM550.. wait, let me get my bill. Ok it stated as. Auto sump gasket 78, FL strainer 117, ZF ori trans fluid 51x11=561, to flush trans fluid with machine 150. After that, the car is bahaving like norm again. This happened back in march 03'.Good luck

Thank you each and everyone of you guys (and gals?) for the most prompt and helpful responses to my situation. I SMS my regular mech last nite and he replied its a gearbox-related thing and asked me to bring it over for a check-up. I hope its nothing serious.

I'll share my problem and solution with you guys (and gals?) once all this is settled. Meanwhile drive safely....

Good luck, bro :top:

p/s: I believe we are all guys here as I have yet to meet an E39 lady owner in the club?

Just to inform you guys that the message didnt appear anymore when I started the car this morning. Following Jerman's advice, I drove the car easily today. After 100 km of driving around, still no repeat of message. I guessed the system may have rectified itself (hopefully).

I am located in Seremban. The GT1 at the wokshop I normally send my car to, is out for repair, so I cannot get a proper assessment of the problem. Does M-Scope in Bt Caves have GT1? Can someone give me the workshop's contact number please.

good luck with ur car bro.good to know ada orang kampung kat sini.nanti bole tt kat sban:top::love:

i experiance the same last 4 days.... my car suddenly shut down while im still driving.. the power just goes out just like im not put in any gear lever, in facts im on lever D, probably at gear 4, crisuing 60-70-km/h... in about 5 min times, i restart the car and it run like nothing happen with no indicator turn out at all... a few days after, the car again suddently shut down, and this time i cannot start the car... called the mec, found out the fuel pump failed. Acvtaully i doubt about it because the pump just been replace with the ori part last 6 months only... but, the mec knows better than me, so i change the party and the car can start and drive normal... i go the the workshop and do the computer checking. it appear fault something like ".. transmission monitor .." and also "EWS interface"... the mec just clean the fault and the car run smoothly.

last night, the car again suddently shut down, no indicator turn out, restart the car, but it just cant. A few min after, the car can start and again it looks like nothing happen.. damn...

Anybody here had the same experiance..? really2 need ur advise... i cannot sleep last nite thinkin y....

Firstly, Clear the fault with GT-1, (possible to print the fault first) then 'selawat 7 kali' and drive as normal. If problem come again only further check-up with GT-1.
Only you could sent to M-Scope for 2nd opinion, otherwise ...... drive till 'kaput;

Bro, PM me when you are in KL, I could introduce M-Scope to you .....

My dear Gerald 5

I think your total bill came to more than RM900 not RM550. Anyway I had been advised by my mech against doing a flush. Instead I'll be changing the ATF only. ZF cost RM50x6= 300; gasket + filter= RM150. All these were bought at First Division in Ipoh Rd. I dont know what the labor charges be would as I would only be doing it either tomorrow or Sat.

Kem, the salesman in 1st Div said that many Beemer owners have been frequently misled by the "long-life" claim on the ZF container as life-long and thus dont see any need to replace the ATF. He advise a change of ATF after every 50k km. May be he's rite!

even if you got the error to go away, best to get it checked. You don't want to get stuck in a place where it's gonna be tough for you to drive to your mech when it happens again (say up in genting/cameron, etc.).

It could be a simple gearbox oil flush, sensors or to the max such as gearbox rebuild or its ECU. good luck and please come back and update what happened.
