I have been having this problem since I got the alternator changed on my E34(a 90 model with engine swapped to '93 M50B25 and dashboard. No change to ECU). I have searched the forum to see if others are facing the same problem. It happened before my car's alternator died. When the car was at idle, i.e., waiting at the traffic light junction, the inspection turned up, the engine shutdown follow and then the electrical power also died together. The car would be as if the car was switched off. I turned the key back to off and twist to crank the engine again. Nothing happened and it wouldn't turn on the electrical power as well. It would only turn on after a brief moment, i.e., 30 seconds later. Then the car would start as per normal. I drove my car to workshop and was told that the battery and alternator were about to go already. The car acted normally when at workshop. So I made appointment with them two days later so that I could send over for a repair.I had the battery and alternator changed and thought the issue was over. Then it happened again on the day when I was about to drive my car to work. The engine was cold. I inserted the key and turn to crank the engine. Everything was normally, and then the inspection bar showed up again and the same symtom returned afterwards. I waited for a brief moment to crank the engine again. This time, a code was shown on the LED display, "Code TACHO". I searched the Net and was told it would go away if I disconnect the battery overnight. The code dissappeared the next day but the problem persisted. So I drove my car to workshop again. They suggested to clean the throttle body for me and said the car should be back to normal after the clean up.I was a happy camper again for the next few days and after a day trip to KL and back to Penang the gremlin came and haunted me again! I am pulling my hair trying to figure what could have happened.Could it be due to the short circuit to the circuitry? One more thing, it all happened after the coolant level warning showed up when I switched on the head lights. Checked the coolant level and it was ok.I would appreciated if someone can show me some leads here. TIA!

I decided to drive my car straight to workshop when the CODE: TACHO was flashing on my dashboard again. They managed to find out what happened: A disconnected cable from Main fuse box to the battery terminal. The engine shuts down when the mech dangles the cable. Yes, chinlai you are right. It is the disconnection that causing this issue.
