i bought 2 bottles of castrol edge sports 0/40W at tesco midah for RM 149/bottle. however the problem is that i found all the bottles are opened before and there are no internal seal to seal the oil container. Is this normal for castrol bottles?

I think you better return them...all new engine oil bottles have an internal foil seal and an outter plastic seal. If both opened then highly likely it is used oil. I could be wrong but best to check at other spare parts shop for the same oil.

Glad to know that you hv bought it and sorry about can't help you to purchase coz was busy all the while recently.

No worries bro. Thanks for your replies bro. I understand your circumstances at that point in time. Take care and well wishes.

yup the Castrols in Tescos are from Europe and does not have internal seals. The plastic cap shouldnt be open though.

Seen any Tescos in KL with 10W40 Castrol Magnatec? Gotta buy some tomorrow.

Tesco kepong have 5 bottles of magnetec but rm99.. shell helix hx7 rm89. - 9 bottles and castrol edge 139rm 3 bottles left

Yup there's plenty of Castrol Magnatec in Tesco Damansara too and a shelf full of Castrol 0W-40 at RM139. Shell Helix HX7 10W40 is going for a promo price of 89.90 (normal 99.00)

Mobil1 Fully Synthetic 0W-40 going at RM129 (manufacture Jan 2011) cheap price for an excellent oil but one bottle left at the shelf :(

Beware as most castrol sold at tesco are made on 2010

The general consensus is that an unopened engine oil has a shelf life of two to three years. So even if the manufacture date is 2010 it should still be good provided it was stored properly.

From Mobil 1 website:-

"Question:
What's the Shelf Life on Opened Bottles of Mobil 1?
I could not find an exact answer in the FAQs. I did read that Mobil 1 has a maximum shelf life of 5 years for un-opened containers. Is this true also for opened containers? I have a quart of Mobil 1 Extended Performance (15W-50) that is eight months old, kept in a cool dry place and was wondering if is still good to use and what is the shelf-life on open containers? Thank you very much!!

Answer:
An 8-month-old oil, even opened, should work well in your engine. As long as the bottle is capped and kept dry, the product is safe to use for up to 5 years. Keeping it cool and dry are the key conditions to control degradation and additive drop-out."

Guess not bro.. :-(

Let me call the seller tomorrow and see where he got the supplies and why so cheap ... Could be a Raya promotion

Having said that i bought 4 bottles of BHP Syngard 8000 (SN rated) for RM98 a bottle during the recent launching of the said oil, normal price would be RM188 :4:

I have been using Mobil 1 5W-50 for my E36 325i.

I have never seen Mobil 1 0-40W in Tesco before.Anyone tried it?

How does Mobil 5W-50 compare to Mobil 1 0W-40 ?

What about Shell 5W-40 vs Castrol 0W-40 vs Mobil 1 0W-40 ?

3 possibilities of cheap sync oil.

1. Almost expire, old stock.

2. Mineral based or semi sync oil labeled as synthetic, typical of American oil because American legislation allow them to do so.

3. Fakes / recycle oil

Which 1 do you prefer?

1) Could be old stock yeah sure but expired? Not sure about that as Mobil stated engine oil is good up to 5 years - http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...kMobil/Shelf_Life_Opened_Bottles_Mobil_1.aspx

2) Before you want to condemn US oil companies it was Castrol (a european company) that marketed a group 3 oil as fully synthetic in America in which Mobil filed a complaint.

"Mobil filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau in the US claiming that Castrol was engaging in false advertising by calling Syntec "full synthetic" since it was now being made with Group III base oil. Castrol was able to present enough "evidence" to convince the NAD that Group III base oil could legitimately be called synthetic, so they rulled in Castrol's favor. This ruling has no "legal" standing. It merely means that as far as the NAD is concerned, an oil company is not falsely advertising an oil as "full synthetic" if that oil is made from Group III base oil."

Thus the European are at it too in fact they started it hehehe ... At the end it's the additives and detergent that matters plus a regular OCI. Having said that Castrol Edge 0W-40 is a superb oil and my car loves it! :top:

3) i agree with you bro it's very hard to distinguish which is fake and which is original the best way is to buy your engine oil from Petrol stations or from a reputable retailer like Eneos or Tesco BUT you pay the full retail price for the added security (except Tesco lah)... It's like buying spare parts directly from BMW, bloody expensive but you're assured it's the real deal lol

One good thing about Pennzoil is that it is bottled and distributed by UMW Malaysia thus it's not far fetched the price can be that low especially during on sale/festive season plus you can check with them directly just to be sure. Also i would like to add that online sellers have low overheads thus they can afford to sell at cheap prices. Refer to my post above.
