Hi there, my name is Yuez, owned E46 M54B22 (year 2003), i'm seeking your expertise, i'm experienced missing or burning of the engine oil, currently every 1.5-2k km i need to top up another liter. So far no leaking shown or sign everywhere on the engine or exhaust. any advise?

can check your CCV - crank case vent valve and it's associated hoses....torn diaphragm on the valve can lead to hi oil consumption.defective hoses will cause vacuum leak causing lumpy idle...

I'm driving a E46 320i with M54B22 engine too, I'm facing the similar issue, just mine is mostly after 3-4k km mileage then only will need to top up. However, previously I do have issue of o-ring harden on crank sensor and also vanos oil leaking.
BTW, mind to share where's the CCV - crank case vent valve locate?

It is below intake manifold

Thanks for the info, will check CCV. Anyway, someone told me about to replace the valve seal.. does it relate?

If that happen to Valvetronic engine such as N42 or N46 I do agree about valve seal. I have replaced E87 N46 valve seals before and it solved the engine oil loss issue. As for M54 engine, I don't think so but I'm not in a position to comment that. Perhaps moots can.

agree with Zidee on the valve seals on the M54.
always do the simpler and cheap(er) things first during any troubleshooting process.

replacing the valve seals is not the same as engine overhaul rite? roughly how much to replace the N42/N46 valve seals? also how long does it normally take? need to leave the car at the workshop for a few days?

better send your car to a trained foreman to check rather than try n fix yourself
consequences to replace engine is too exp

For Valve seals I relate my experience with Valvetronic engine. I.e. N46 engine. One popular workshop quoted me 3k+ to do top overhaul. After various research, I settle for another workshop in Jalan Ipoh. Cost me RM1400 and problem solved. 2 days job.

I have this problem also. 320i M54B22 year 2003. I have changed the ccv and its hoses. But the problem still persists. 1L about every 1k km. No leaking, no smoke whatsoever.
