IMO the 335i e92 and e92 m3 is very different. for straight line speed even the 335i can match the m3 at lower speeds due to its turbo torque, and a chipped 335 will beat an m3 no problems. but that's about it, straight line speed. the m3 offers emotion, soundtrack, handling, history which the 335i can never get. and the m3 is also not very moddable to be faster in the straights unless u slap a supercharger.
as for E92M3 vs turbo cars, i think the those GTI stage 2s, golf r's, etc can match them/surprise at lower speeds/impromptu street race due their turbo and quick DSG, but at highway speeds 150-300kph the M3's 420PS will murder those 240-260PS hot hatches.
and i see many GTRs driven daily. at rather slow speeds.
