Hello All.I just brought back an E90 from UK -320i Petrol Manual 2006 Model. I was just wondering whether its possible for me to convert it into Auto transmission, as i was having difficulty moving around in KL due to massive traffic jam most of the day.I would like to seek advice from forumers ie whether its 1) do-able, 2) cost 3) risk 4) if its do-able, the places to go 5) any further info.if this has been discussed before, kindly guide me to the post as i was looking for the post in this forum since yesterday. Thank you guys!A

Hey Aman,

Welcome to the forum.

Thinking about this, it is not impossible but the work would be very involved. Taking out electronics from the car is one thing but adding electronics into it, hmm. Here are the stuff involved in the process I think (true for E46).

1. get an okay auto trans
2. long shaft may be needed as the gearbox length may be different
3. diff/final drive could also be different between auto and manual
4. EGS/transmission computer to control transmission and communicate with DME/engine control unit
5. Wiring harness
6. ATF cooler line
7. Pedal would be optional, you can keep the clutch pedal
8. IKE/instrument cluster I think just need to be reprogrammed
9. Installing and reprogramming (lots of it)

Not sure if anyone has done this before. You may want to consider swapping ride with another member. Cheers.

Hi bro, original manual is very rare here and much sought after by some enthusiast. Quite a few willing to spend RM10-15k to convert from auto to manual. so pls keep the gem intact!

So in short sell the manual 320i and buy an auto 320i instead? :D

i ll say keep the Manual 320I
I driven a friend's Manual 320i back in UK and was great. And Manual gearbox are much more easier to maintain.

P/S: My other friend's Manual 320D was even more mind blowing

I think he cant sell within 2 years since is personal AP. so better buy a second car since he would need a spare car when his car banyak masuk workshop!

guys,

after second thought, the dilemma i have is i dont think selling the car at one point in the future is a good option for me, bc of the complicated tax structure of the car. Even though im allowed to transfer ownership after two years, the tax exemption on the car means that i need to pay the balance of the tax, which was exempted primarily, even if i sell the car after 10 years!

so, the only option for me is to continue enjoying the car and that means conversion have to be done. im not saying that i didnt enjoy driving manual beemer but driving the machine in London and KL is very different. i used to enjoy it so much. but with traffic congestion almost everywhere, driving a manual beemer is not fun anymore.

can somebody help me with rough figure on how much i have to spend? is going to Auto Bavaria an option?

im in dillemma.

Driving in London especially zone 1 and 2 is definitely not fun... congestion is equally bad.... i find
my 6 years stay in UK, i never ever really enjoyed driving in the the capital. usually is the Tube for me....
