Recently acquired a 2002 E46 N42B20 with 68K kms on the clock. Routine service found that the vaccum pump for the brake servo has an oil leak. eems that this is common problem. Quite expensive for a replacement unit.Anyone replaced this unit? The price? Is there any repair kit out there? I believe it could just be a bad oil seal.TQ

Direct from owner. Mudah advertisement. A truly under utilized car from a fine gentlemen. Initially I couldn't believe it but all the signs are there to confirm that mileage. Expansion tank still in good condition with original sticker still intact & shows manufacture date 2002. Absorbers are the original set. Steering & seat leathers as good as new. Accelerator & brake padels looks new with little wear. Since this car is for my daughter I went ahead to replace the expansion tank as a precautionary measure. Full set of keys (4 pieces) & full service history also passed to me. AB records show that the mileage on May 2009 was less than 1700 kms. This is not a typo error.

Put the car through a full detailing session & the original paint job turn to life. Car looks brand new now.

Is it this thing? Yeah probably just a bad oil seal

Yes, that's the vaccum pump. Quite an important mechanism for the valvetronic engines. It pumps vaccum for the brake servo. Failure of this unit will cause the brakes to feel hard. Further neglect will result in engine oil to being pump into the brake servo thus causing brake failure.

From my understanding it's a common problem but the funny thing is not many member here discuss about this problem. So my advise to the valvetronic owners, please ask your mechanic to check this vaccum pump on your next visit to them.

Was informed by local parts distributors that it cost more than RM900 and that's only a German OEM replacement part. I also checked with Singapore ,an original BMW unit cost SGD450.00

So the big question : Is there any repair kit out there?

An indication of seriousness of this problem:

RECALL: 2002-2008 BMW 7-Series
NHTSA Campaign Number: 10V446000
Manufacturer BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC
Recall Date: SEP 30, 2010
Potential Number Of Units Affected: 198352
DescriptionSERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:pOWER ASSIST:VACUUM
SummaryBMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, 6-SERIES, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2008 7-SERIES VEHICLES. A CHECK VALVE OF THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP MAY LEAK A SMALL AMOUNT OF LUBRICATING OIL. OVER TIME THIS COULD RESULT IN CONTAMINATION OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
ConsequencePOWER ASSIST BRAKING PERFORMANCE COULD BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED. IN EXTREME CASES THERE COULD BE A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST BRAKING. AN UNEXPECTED REDUCTION OR LOSS IN POWER BRAKING ASSIST MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
RemedyBMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2010.

Mine 2002 E46 N42 got this problem 2 years ago, the unit can be refurbished but a new unit cost RM750, installation maybe will set you back another RM100. It consist of 2 main parts attached with gasket...its the gasket failure actually being the culprit causing the leak.

Vincent, Any pics of the new car ? :)

Pics will have to be later when Justin has time to take & upload. Did a diagnostic test on the car today. Zero fault codes. Also confirmed that the mileage is genuine.

I saw one grey color with tan color seats , rain sensor and rear blinds plus low mileage. Is that the one?

Not this one. Mine is Ebony Black with black leather & factory fitted reverse sensor. The one above sounds pretty interesting too.

The leaky (small) has finally got attended to.

You will not be able to see this leak unless the car is on hoist and you check from under the car. This vaccum pump is placed just infront of the firewall and at the back of the camshaft. However the symthoms of a leaky vaccum pump is quite easy to detect without putting the car on hoist. If you start your car in the morning and you see smokes from under the engine bay area or you can smell burning oil, then it's highly possible that you are having this problem.

The reason for the smoke and smell of burning oil in the morning is because the vaccum pump is located right above the exhaust pipe. Some motor oil will drip on to the exhaust pipe when you park overnight. The smoke & smell is the result of the hot exhaust pipe burning the fresh motor oil.

It's not a very serious issue but can be a bit irritating because of the smokes and smell of burning oil.

Up to now I have heard of many who just replaced the complete unit. But this is quite costly. Depending of availibility of stock (fast moving item) the price range is between RM750 - RM900 for an OEM unit. My check with Singapore for an original unit is SGD450

After studying a "faulty changed out" unit I find that the problem for the leak is actually due to harden/elongated O ring rubber seals. When you open up the unit the O ring cannot be reused. It would be a waste of time and money/labour if you refitted the old O ring. It will surely leak again very soon.

There are 2 O rings. One smaller which is the outer and a bigger one which is the inner seal. Check with http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/ reveals that only the smaller O ring is available for sale. This will not solve the problem. Not sure why the larger O ring is not available. My guess is BMW wants you to spend big i.e. replace the entire unit.

I asked my mechanic/workshop to go hunting for this larger O ring and the good news is he has found the correct size.

The vaccum pump has today been serviced and refitted with the 2 new O rings. Hopefully this will work. I will monitor the situation over the new 2 -3 weeks to see if the problem is resolved.

Sharing this in the hope that our friends with N42/N46 engine will be able to save some money.

Stay tuned for updates.

what is symptom of vaccum pump fault?

Your brake padel feels hard when depressed. If you ignore this, the engine oil will flood the brake servo and you will
Eventually lose all braking. Quite dangerous. Heard of a few cases of accident due to the brake failure.

vincent, my mechanic was told me that vacuum pump fault but i did not feel any problem with braking system. No braking lose, no sound. So what is problem actually?

The symptoms of a bad Vaccum pump is as per what I mentioned. If you are not having these symptoms, then I would suggest that you ask your mechanic what exactly is he referring to. My guess is you are only having a bad oil seal.
