Hi all, hope all is well. Lately my father's 2005 e46 318i has been facing some 'lag' or 'delay' during the first engage to 'D' in the morning. It will lag for about 2 seconds before the car could move. However, it only happen once, that is the first engage in the morning when the engine was first started. After that, it works fine for the whole day. Is that a hint to a gearbox problem? Or some other causes? Clutch? Anyone had experience this? Would really appreciate if anyone could enlighten me. Thanks a bunch. Regards

Hi....anyone could share anything of the above problem? Any e46 drivers who face the same thing? Would really appreciate any input......thanks....

suggest that you change the gearbox oil and see whether the situation improves.

it's supposed to be 'sealed for life', but that's rubbish! how can a lubricant for moving parts not deteriorate over time?

whilst you're at it, might as well change the differential oil too.

preventive maintenance - gives you peace of mind...

bro. i have the same experiance. i dun think its a major problem.anyway did you change the ATF oil before. cos if you dump in wrong new atf spec, that lag will be a problem.

secondly, if you haven changed it, you need to change your atf oil . i just changed mine and the lag problem is gone. and gear changed lagi smooth, last time oredi smooth, now even better.

insist your mechanic use back the same atf oil. if not sure triple check !!!

Thank you jinooi and totoro. Will look out for the atf and differential oil. Am very worried that the gearbox need to be changed....was told the entire gearbox cost bout RM 20k or more by the workshop.

Lets see what happen. Thanks again :)

no prob. remember dun simply use just any aft oil.

differential oil has nothing to do with gear box.

Hi Totoro,

Can you explain more on ATF and Differential oil? I am still a noob, always thought that it is somewhat a gearbox lubricant or something. Thanks a lot.
