with RM7K ++, M-Scope could overhaul your gearbox with 2 years unlimited mileage warranty.

If you have extra money sent yr car to M-Scope to rectify the issue ....

or.

force E.H. Link to solve yr problem.

JYazid : My gearbox is starting to slip. What about those gearbox specialists u see in Motor Trader and On The Road back pages. Are they any good? To my knowledge, it would be much cheaper to repair than to replace. Whole box costs 8-10k recond. U can change gear ratios and some kickass mechanics internally if u repair. What u reckon?

before you do anything else, what's the fault code that stored on the car? unless your car is serviced by a non bmw specialist who doesnt have the necessary OBD equipment, then all i can say its too bad, you've commited a fault at the very begining.

please just head over to a bmw specialist and have the faults read and noted. do this everytime before you come in and seek for answers at any forum as this would be of great help for everyone in diagnosting you cars issue.

When its cold nothing happens. Then after some running around for about 10km nothing happens. Then when i stop at a red light thats when things go nasty. If i lightly floor the accelerator nothing happens until it changes to 2nd gear where the shifting gets rough. If i pull out of a red light with a bit more acceleration the 1st gear slips sending the car into a violent shudder. Its like trying to drive a manual and releasing the clutch lighning fast many many times without any acceleration pedal. Btw the car is not moving. It doesnt spin the wheel. No dashboard warning light. Just violent jerks but stationary.

Then when i slow down at a red light or junction the downshift can be felt and it can be very annoying. Sometimes to the extent of a loud and violent DONK. Then the cycle repeats itself all over again. And to be honest it feels quite heavy to move the car from a standing start. After 3rd gear its all good. Tried to change ATF fluid before but it didnt help a least bit. The ATF oil was not very stained. Last change was 60k kms. Changed gearbox mounting still no difference. Took a look at the drive shaft coupling but its still fine. No cracks.

So this has to be something internal as my car is already quite ageing. 1996 528i with 190k kms on the clock. So i guessed it was about time too. What do u reckon?

adrian dude,

sorry to say this but i guess your g'box is reaching a critical stage. Send your car to a bmw specialist. 5sp ZF is no job for normal trannies repairman. m-scope is well-known. i heard they are the authorised agent/dealer for ZF in malaysia. even my mechanic send g/box to him. yep RM7k will get your ZF trannies overhauled with 2 yr warranty. i have a friend who sent his e39 to his normal mechanic for RM5k overhaul job but ended up with a shabby job. in the end he has to go to m-scope to rectify..for another RM4k rectification job.

Adrian,

Same problem that I had. The 1st gear slipping. Sent my ride to Naidu (behind EPF). He quoted be less than 6k for overhaul. Torque converter separate. In the end I needed to replace the valve body and repair the torque converter. total bill 7k plus. But he did a great job. I think he also sends it out to someone that is his "sifu". If you send yours in it would be less because I sent mine to another shop that dismantle the gearbox and started giving different quotes from the original quote. That pissed me off therefore I had my car towed to Naidu. Naidu during the inspection found that some items was already replaced by the first conman (the torque covertor because a Volvo). I guess if I had gone to Naidu in the first place it would have been within his original 6k as many items need not to be source.

My ride is the same year and model as yours.

I shud pay them a visit. Thanks for the valuable advice. I also quite sceptical about normal gearbox fellas. Guess M-Scope will be 7k richer!

Adrian, what Azan23uk says is correct ... you could use your car till the gearbok total kaput ( it will go to 'emergency mode first' ) The life of your gearbox is 200,000 km.

Change to recond unit is ..... you don't know what they recond with the g/box.

Unless you have extra RM7K, then sent to M-Scope. normal mechenic cannot give you 2 years unlimited mileage warranty. Further more if you are are using older g/box (used in single Vanos e39, donno what the model no) you could ask him to upgrade for more power. (WC9922 could confirm this)

Been to your shop many times lah. Just didn't know which one is you. The black BMW should be yours right. Mine is also black but original lor no mods.
Catch up one day in your shop. If you plan to keep your ride the worth getting done properly. 7k for another 150 to 180K km is not too expensive. Haha. Funny thing was mine ride no fault in the diagnostic except that I can feel 1st gear slipping. Quite dangerous expecially coming out of junction. Had to use manual to switch to 2nd gear. 2nd onward no problem. I also change my gearbox oil every 60 to 80K.

Cheers. Hope your ride you be up and running soon.

Actually while looking for quotes I found few chop shops that offer recond straight from the potong car at around 4k+ but only 1 to 2 weeks warranty. That one you really depend on your luck. I chose a rebuilt because of the warranty and also at least have the piece of mind that all critical parts are replaced.

Where is this M-Scope? I am intrigued by this "upgrade for more power" (I assume less transmission losses or different gear ratios) that someone mentioned that they can do together with reconditioning a pre-facelift E39 5-speeder.

Im with u Paul. When i bring my car over i will ask also. Since they're going to take it all apart might as well replace with some 'performance' parts. Gears are all of same size and thickness only the 'gigi' are different. So i assume it would cost a whole lot more. Will let u know as soon as i see them.

Btw....keep up the good work in ur car blog. Im an avid reader.

I'm also interested to upgrade my GB. Maybe we can do group thingy for special price.

WC9922 & Yazid,

Maybe u guys could help us on this. TQ
