Hi,i just bought my 520i local 2003',i face this problem here,1)The 'check engine oil level' light on 2)the asc and abs light on 3)when the rpm going down to about 1k rpm my engine shut down with all the light still on(battery still supply in) ,i push gear to N swithoff the engine and swith on again, luckily the engine can restart ,this happen few times since two weeks ago i went to the benzone usj work shop to change a oem oil fuel pump, engine oil sensor (located at the bottom of the engine oil tank),the problem still occur, but the computer check doesn't show any fault on the crankshaft sensor,or the mech al so dont have any idea to solve the problem but ask me to leave the car with him to check properly, is anyone here faces this propblem before,i really love this car, hope anyone here can help on this ,thank you.

you got a very unique problem.. Would be interesting to know what is the root cause of the problem.

Sorry cannot help as never encounter it before.

Dunno if it helps you or not.

I encountered similar issue with my E39 as well. It just shut down the engine when the engine JUST started - it revs, and then the RPM will drop too low and the engine dies off. Note: when you just wanna start the engine after being parked for a while. Experienced this a couple of times until1 fine night it gotten me stuck on a 1 lane carpark for 20 mins and plenty of impatient car owners behind me... luckily still managed to start the engine using left foot on brakes and right food on accelerator!

You may have to bring to a BMW specialist in order for them to diagnose your ECU and check where the fault lies. Other mechanics may not find the issue so easily (due to equipment difference???)

My problem is with the CAM SENSOR. Replaced the faulty part for RM400 and the engine was purring once again!

My 2 cents!

Bro,

I had similar engine shut down problem with my e39. Earlier computer check did not show cam shaft sensor fault. Engine shut down 3 times last week at traffic light junction. Replaced Cam shaft sensor and problem resolved.

From what you have written above and the parts replaced by Benzone and not rectifying the engine shut down problem, I think they are not experienced enough. Simple replaced this and that and later on have no idea to solve the problem. I believe your fuel pump and engine oil sensor are still good. Moral of the story is....take your car to a reliable and experienced BMW workshop.

i send to BMW specialist in order for them to diagnose my ECU ,the mech diagnose my ECU but result show with NO CAM SENSOR problem ,the abs module unit faulty need to replaced about rm1850 , he said it maybe cause by mechanical faulty & need time to find it out, btw is your asc & abs lights on during the incident ? thanks for your advise.:top:

ok,i will go to another workshop to recheck again, may i know how much cost you for that cam sensor?thanks herbert.

NO need to buy new ABS, go to chop shop and get a used one. Suprised to hear that your e39 520 year 2003 is with ASC and not the improved version of DSC. Do a check on your VIN number and confirm year of production.

1) do u check the engine oil level? it could be real engine oil level low...
2) U need to change the ABS control unit(rectangle box). It cost u RM2800 for a brand new.
3) Check whether water leak under the carpet or not as plenty of cable under the carpet. It might due to short circuit. I change cranf sharf sensor (RM380), problem not solved, now my car still in workshop for troubleshooting. It already 4th day...

If u want the ABS sensor, do let me know, i have front and rear for sale, hehehh..

hi guys, thanks a lot for you guys response,i will send my ride to workshop today ,will update the status later on here, thanks ....!:top:

my wife called me few days ago tht the abs&asc lite liteup while driving. i told her if the giabox can shift to higher gear thn it cud be either the abs sensor at the rear . she told me tht the braking is still the same as b4 and all the func on the meter r still the same. i rule out the pump faulty. told her to go to workshop for computer checkup to pinpoint the right sensor.

it turnout tht the rear rhs sensor wire putus. told the guy to joint /solder the sensor with new wire, tape it, reset the error. and she drives home hapily :top:

I changed my ABS module before....E39 520 2003 model too...no DSC but ASC only. About Rm2k i think.
As for the stalling, check underneath the ECU, there are relays there, especially now rainy season, water could be filled there shorting those relays...mine kena before...luckily can blow dry and no problem. Timing sensor is another culprit...which cause stalling and crap idling...

yeah i already check the oil level is normal.by the way i will send my car to workshop next week ,thanks.

Hi bro

I faced this problem before it has nothing to do with the Cam sensor when it happen to me it waqs my Vanos sensor. I don't know how much it cost as my car was under warranty. Te engine dies off when i stop at traffice lights and it takes a little time to start. You will have 2 sensors it it's double vanos. 1 of it is faulty.

Hope this helps
