Hi fellow Bimmer lovers, i've been away for long long time after i got my E30 and i miss the TT sessions...was at BurgerKing last week and bumped into a fleets of BMWs...wow...nice and big gathering. Bravo to committees and members! Anyway i think i got the bug again...this time maybe an E36 and would like to consult you pros here on the model of 318is. Whats the difference of and Is and non Is? And what are the variations there are for E36 coupe? And is there any E36 318is owners here? Maybe can share me some experience or scans of your ride? Thanks. RegardsEujax

Turbo.. vroom vroom :D Lovely..

Kena racun ah brother? Aiseh.. why didn't join in our convoy?

IS means Sports for 318 fleet.

There is the E30 318iS (m42) then E36iS (m42 & m44).

The m42/m44 is a 16 valve timing chain engine.

Thank you guys...

Who is AlBundy again? Sorry been away long time.

I remember Elwin. How are you? Still running in your E30? Anyway thanks for the info. Timing chain sounds better but am not sure bout other parts' maintenance. So how does the Is differ from the normal ones mechanically? Or is it just cosmetics? 318Is is still a 4 potter right?

Regards

M42 is strong as hell, mine has been running for 15 years without any major problem. go for it man, buy manual
318 normal : single cam
318is : twincam

the M42 from the E30 and E36 318is is based on the M40... It shares a number of wear and tear components with the M40, so maintenance is not much different from the M40.

If you search around for old reviews from automag overseas, you'll find that most of them rate the 318is highly even when comparing with the 325i. It's an all-rounder model in the E36 range.

I tot "iS" stands for "istimewa" and "Shiok"......:p

yeah, not for nothing the 318iS is sometimes called the "Baby M3". According to Albundy, it shares many suspension components with the M3 and of course the 318iS is the base for the BTCC cars driven by Joachim Winklehock and Steve Soper.

so basically, it has double of the valves, extra one cam and timing chain.

but there are more than just that, the trottle body, butterfly valves, the intake manifold, the design of the engine, it's sports. the internals are build stronger also than the m40.

eujax, , my e30 is fine.. .and its with the IS heart now. ;)

Thanks...i sense 'racun'...

Hey people thanks for the quick and helpful info...the more i read the more i cannot sleep...baby M3, this is a strong word...:)

Anyway does this also mean that its maintenance cost will be higher from regular 318i? And what should i be expecting to pay for a used? I believe there isnt many 318iS out there do they?

When is next TT session and where? :D

Regards

well, ,maintainance is the same as the m40. ;). just normal oil change, plugs, air filter, oil filter... it's just the engine is more robust and high reving. it gets you going.

i m sure you haven't being bitten by the 6pot yet right. both 4pot and 6pot has it's pros and cons. depending what you are going after

The E30 318is was given the baby M3 moniker, not for the E36 318is. The M42 in the E36 was later developed into S42 2.0 and used in the touring car championships instead of the M50 engine due to the lighter engine weight. (Lighter front nose translates to less nose dive under braking and easier to chuck the cars into corners)

The M42 engines is considered highly rated around the world and it didn't disappoint. Drive one and you'll understand why. As for it dethroning the M5x series road engines, it is not designed for that and it won't. But as a complete car+engine package, the 318is is not that far behind in overall scores and driving impression. Remember that an engine is only part of the equation.

me bad me bad. I got it wrong, tot E36 318iS was nicknamed baby M3. It's Monday lah. Thousand apologies!!!!

Come on my friend... no one is right or wrong here... we learn from each other for the love of BMW..

I am thinking of getting the E36 Coupe 318IS same as our friend here is searching for.

But market value for this 1993 (Actual year made) is around RM30-35K max.. Have yet to find the faults of the car..

FYI, all the facelifted E30 318i(4 doors) and 318is (2 doors) and all the E36 318i and 318is in the USA were equipped with the M42B18 engines. there are none M40B18 engines in the USA.

And IMHO, if the 318is were bought into Malaysia as an official model, the 325i would not have sold as well as it did. the M42 engine would have closed the gap on the 325i (lower CC = lower roadtax, 4cylinder = perceived lower consumption and lower maintenance).

the E36 318is came in 4 door guise when the M44B19 was introduced during the final stages of the E36 lifecycle. capacity increased to ~1900cc translates to better torque but same hp ratings. However, it has a cast iron crankshaft as opposed the forged steel crankshaft in the M42B18. Also the OBD2 on the M44 restricted modding potential for the engine. So for the modheads, the M42 is still the better choice of the 2 '318is' engines.

Very helpful infos...

Thanks all for the info. Few more question in mind...

1. From what year to what year is this E36 318iS manufacture?
2. There are 2 engine variants, M44 or M42 is that right?
3. Is the market value now as mentioned by Geoffrey, RM35k max?
4. Which model is fit with M50s engine? 328i? 325i?

All for now and really really appreciate your kindness here. Cheers and bravo BMW!

Regards

1) the IS is manufactured since 1992 till 1998 i think.
2) m44 is a newer engine model which based from m43. M44 is running on 1.9L and MAF. new tech. M42 is more old skool and it's based from M40.
