Hi all, i need your opinions. I'm interested in upgrading my braking power. I'd like to change my front discs to something better, and convert the back drums to disc. Can anyone tell me what needs to be done,as in, what parts need to be bought?what brand of disc and pads is good?do i need to change anything at my rear to accomodate the disc or can plug and play?Any and all information is really appreciated. Anyone who has done it pls come forward,im scratching my head thinking what to do :top: thanks!

basically, you will need to do a few upgrades

1) upgrade to 325i brake setup (i.e front ventilated and rear solid disc). You can get the parts from chop shop. For the front, it's just plug and play. but you need to check the condition of the disc and pad. For the rear, you will need to replace the trailing arm and get a new set of handbrake cables. Also do check for disc, pad and handbrake shoes. For the rear, you can also take the opportunity to renew your bushes such as rear subframe, trailing arm bush and rear diff mounting.

2) the 2nd upgrade is to upgrade your servo. Jules, yellow submarine and pussy has done such conversion. I only did the item 1.

cheers

what elwine30 has stated is correct, but also note that the rear trailing arm and disc assembly is becoming rarer these days.

I had mine done as well, and there's a huge difference between the upgrade and the stock e30 m40 setup. Much nicer now. :top:

thanks elwine30 and berserkdroid, though how much will it cost me,ballpark figure for item 1 and 2? My disc getting old already and its time to change so i better get it done, though the braking is still good. Anyways,is it cheaper to get in spore?

Elwine30, when u say use the 325i setup get from chop shop, can i get brand new?Might as well since i plan to keep the car.The rear trailing arm, disc, pad, handbrake cable, bushes, servo, rear diff etc etc if i order online,i order based on the e30 325i is it?

If mati mati cannot order brand new or too expensive, any idea where i can start searching,at which chop shop?or anyone got the stuff?any contact numbers?thanks guys!:D

you order on line all the stuff new besides the arms only, expect to see RM2k plus on the rear, as ofr the front will set you RM800.00 max.

besides the conversion, the braking will be day and night...

wahlau!!can go to about 3-3.5k >_< *cough* ehem...so where are the chop shops again?lol..i was looking to spend max 2k :D any contact numbers i can call or anyone know anyone?ini BMW memang banyak makan wang.lol

ask amax for help.. he knows one guy in klang that has the rear set up..

New OEM ATE ventilated front discs are about RM260/pair...
you'll oso need calipers for the ventilated front disc, I have a pair of used Girling calipers if you're interested. Front is pretty straight forward.

Rear is the trickier part. U'll need the whole rear arm with the knuckers attached to it... u'll need the rear handbrake cables too...

That's about it...

fabianyee where can i get the oem ate discs?RM260,can last ka?the girling calipers goes with ate?how much for it?condition?

can check with the BMW parts dealers or outside parts dealers... The ATE Powerdisc is about twice the price...

the girling calipers are the stock calipers, can go with any OEM spec disc... Just like the ATE calipers... I'll go snap some photos for you to see.. Had the seals and the guide pins changed and was using them until I bought a set of absorbers attached with ATE calipers, so used the ATE calipers instead. The Girling still has a lot of service life in them since Ive changed all the wear and tear seals..

that means u have the ate powerdisc is it?when u say outside is twice the price is that what u mean or u know where to get cheap?thing i'm worried about it apparently nowadays got fake stuff going around, any truth to that?

I have the normal ATE disc... ATE Powerdisc has the the atom design slots on the surface.. Google and read more on the powerdisc if you're interested... Fake stuff??? Don't think the volume for E30's is significant enuf for those to even consider.. But I may be wrong..

anyone here used ATE power disc before or are using now?online got a lot of mixed reviews, some say it sucks, some say its good, some say no difference..so how how?

For everyone's info, the OEM ATE discs are now going for RM280 per set, brand new. Bought them today. Still another two sets left for anyone who's interested.

Fabian, thanks for the tip mate. :top:

jagmalhi, here's my 2 cents: The Power Discs are more geared towards aggressive braking, especially on track. The ATE OEMS are good for street use with a little friskiness on the part of the driver thrown in. I don't think I'll be driving that aggressively on our fantastic roads what with all the potholes, idiot drivers who "dream and drive", psycho Rempit wannabes and the occassional blur pedestrian so the OEM ATEs are good enough for me.

For point A to Point B goody-too-shoes type of driving, Bavarian is selling the Lucas Discs for around RM150.

hehe i'm planning to take the car to the track once in a while :D so i'll got for the powerdiscs..met zoggee yesterday, that dude's already racun me 2nd stage now..hahahaah

Just saw this thread.....

Since Elwine30 mentioned my name - I elaborate more.

Mine is all disc set up from stock and it sucks big time. With a COMPLETE new ATE Powerdisc front, Standard rear, Pagid Fast Road and Braided lines all around - they still do not inspire confidence....maybe I drive too slow. By this time - the replacments already cost perhaps RM1500....perhaps my system is shot but I CANNOT lock my brakes from ANY speed, no matter how hard I stomp the brake ( which is an incorrect way to brake, so PLEASE dun flame me )

Then came mod 2 - the brake booster from a 7 series. Another Rm800 or so - the car brakes much to my comfort.....with no noticeable fade even on Sepang.

Of course, a word of caution. As the car brake are much improved and the E30 a light car - braking in the wet is at best RE-LEARNED. It locks easily since we do not have ABS....so be forewarned.

However, I prefer it this way - at least I can be in control and not the other way round....

This was the best money I spent on car and my regular BMW mechanic was even impressed.

Happy upgrading.

so to put your words in a sentence, upgrade the brake booster with normal discs and good pads and lines kau tim la?:D
