HiMy fuel gauge display on my E30 M40 recently flickers (like rpm display sometimes!) intermittently when driving. After flickering it will sometimes display that the fuel is "full" & remains there although it is not the case. I then tapped the fuel gauge display thru the transparent plastic meter panel with my finger & it will then revert to display the accurate fuel load once more. When the engine is switched off, the fuel gauge will display that the fuel is "empty" which I believe is normal. Was wondering if anyone here has experienced the same & any proposed remedy?Thank you.

mine's been doing that since...forever??? but it doesn't goes to the extreme, just flicker once in a while and back to the actual reading. sometimes it is caused by bad earthing on your meter cluster. just remove it and reseat all the wiring properly may help. cheers.

Sounds simple enough & hope it works. Thanks for sharing.

When you take out your cluster, look behind the fuel gauge. There is a small grounding nut right behind it. Make sure it's tight. Same thing for the other small gauge (water temp) on the other side.

Does it stop flickering..?

Pls update.

Thanks

In my case it worked (so far, so good) & no more flickering fuel gauge. Got my trusted mechanic to do it. In fact 1 of the nuts were missing, my mechanic had it replaced & tightened all the other nuts as well. Gonna fill her up with petrol to test further but I would think the problem has been successfully rectified.

Thanks, Bro bmwky & evilnickwong for the tip!
