erratic fuel gauge.. help

calyon, where did you get it done. I mean the repair. Most workshop would "recommend" that you change the fuel sender instead of resoldering the wires.

at my usual fav srv spot at DJ/Kayu Ara area. of coz changing a new unit would be the perfect solution, but since it still can work.. cuba la 1st. if problem reoccur then no choice but to change. further because of the marked up price for the limited parts now, he suggested not to subscribe to such abuse $$ lor. so if later, koyak again (touch wood) then reconsider changing it at the usual price mah.. new stocks should be ariving in a wk or 2 anyway.

oh, n i have to make sure no one goes near my car during the process with igniteable stuff man coz fuels are aplenty.. scary

So, I was one of the culprit that caused the price to go up... haha... but mine cracked and was leaking fuel when the tank is full... no choice but to change the whole unit. So, does anyone know how to calibrate my fuel gauge to show full (62 litres) again when the tank is full with the new LHS fuel level sender?

any good bm-specialist shld be able to. i recalled he mentioned some technical terms that day, which says like the RH sender shld measure up to the half gauge level then the LH sender measure from middle to full gauge level. coz basically ya fuel will fill up the RH tank 1st then flow over to the LH tank. so u need to constantly move both the arms' level under stimulation to see any error or misreading. apparently if i sender good n the other not, u'll not get pinpoint accuracy. ya workshop shld have tested all possible extreme reading before he affixed back the assembly (i.e. LH max up + RH max up, LH max down + RH max up, LH middle + RH max down, etc... then compare gauge level)

yes, n i spent the whole afternoon seeing that *.I.* (almost doze off)

I only changed my LHS fuel sender unit... workshop did try maximising the level, manually (with the sender unit outside the tank), but by then the float is way over the highest possible position possible... maybe they are not skillful enough to fine tune it, will go talk to the workshop owner again.

Calyon, which workshop in the DJ area. I know 3 guys, M1, Optimum and Bavarain Auto Works.

Anyways, you're right about the smell of gas, car was reaking of that for 10 days. I was away in S'pore over the week and when I cam back yesterday, I left the door opened for a few minutes and the smell is all cleared.

Also, I took Jarance's idea and have saved my old pump and floater, for future use. As for "the" problem. Have not happened to me since and am jealous that you managed to fix it without spending any money.

Do keep me posted, I did mentioned to Ah-Meng that he should try to "save" my pump and floating unit but he felt that changing it was the best option. So Jarance, changing the 2 units did fix my problem, don't think I was completely fleeced there.

Ha Ha Ha.. Changing to a brand new unit is always the BEST option. There are many ways to skin a cat..

The only difference is trouble free usage until the wear and tear come back or lower cost of repairing it but with a bit of the problem coming back sooner.

correction! Each of the fuel sender is calibrated to indicate half full when the float is fully up (i.e. at full tank). This is because both of the fuel senders is connected in series.

ive got the same prob wit my wifey's E36 then i change both of the fuel pump system & now back to normal again............cheers

foo fixed it for me. if u hang around those shops u mentioned, u'll know where it is (avoid advert)

actually he did suggested to change new 1 coz from the stimulations, we found out that even when the LH&RH bottoms up, the gauge needle still hangs around in the mid of the lighted round dot (by right shld be at the leftmost of the dot la..). other levels all seems fine, n since the part's price is being marked up, cheepo a bit lor. but a new one like jarance mentioned shld last much longer till the next pit stop anyway

It finally happened to me.. My fuel pump went kaput after 240,000 KM usage last Saturday. Try calling a few shop but out of stock. Finally went to chopshop but also could not get the parts. (quoted RM320 for used fuel pump and sender)

Left with no choice, I did the unthinkable... eh.. I bought a japanese fuel pump (RM80) and retrofit it to my car on Sunday. Trial run from Klang to JB.. not much problem.. Feel a bit of lack of pickup but that is my feeling only..

Now looking for an ori pump.. Anybody want to sell their pump!!!

frankly, i think she has served u well enough through that mileage..

last i heard, besides the ripeoff kl supplier, AutoBavaria is the only other source for that part now. do u think there are some correlation amongst us that so many sender failed at the same period? X-files? :D

Mined had the same problems recently. So came to look for a solution and guess what, kaboom, I found this thread. X- files? Earth changing electromagnetic field?

Or end of design life of this product. All fail at around the same time. Just time to change....

Hey Jarance,

i've got a "used" pump+float for sale ?? :))))) Me feeling is that the Pump is working ok, if you can fix the variance on the sender unit, you may have an interim solution.

Yo, thanks for the offer. I am interested!! PM me your price. BTW, what the milage clocked by your car? Based on my experience, the fuel pump will "failed" around 240,000 KM. Need this info coz want to know how long i can use it.:D

Jarance, the original fuel pump and floater were in the car for about 63,500km before I got the "Erratic fuel reading". Just so that we are in-sync, my car is a E46 325i 2003 model!.

Not sure whether the pump can be savaged or not. I have check with the ETK for E36 and E46 fuel pump, I observed that there is a slight difference in design and mounting. However, I am still interested. Dont mind to do a bit of modification if the dimension are the same. I have the old pump with me and we can compare the pumps. Now the only thing is when can we meet. I am now in JB and only plan to go to KL in about 2 weeks time.

Can anybody advised whether the 325I fuel pump pressure is the same for 318I?

Jarance, we could meet at M-Speed if you want to. Anyways, the 325i has a larger fuel tank and logic dictates that it is handling a higher pressure than the smaller 318i tanks??

unker J, I'm still using the japanese fuel pump retrofitted when my ori BMW fuel pump kaput about 2 years ago... The jap pump is for a wira 1.8. Then again, the E30 M40 intank fuel pump could be different from the E36 fuel pump...

wow, u guys are really "daring" man :))) retro-fitting fuel pumps, I would hate to be driving to Terengganu and having it fail on me half-way through my journey.

Otherwise, if it is a "city" car, it may be worth the risk.
