Hi people. Hope all is well. Anyway while my hunt for the E30 cabrio, this W124 E200 pop up instead. What do you guys think about this car? I know its BMW forum but just wanna hear your experience and advice. Btw, its a 4 speed manual, inline 4 Carb engine. Very well kept car asking around RM20k. Any thoughts? Feel free to PM me if any of you have some websites or forum for Mercedes that you wanna reccomend. Thanks a bunch.Cheers,

i would rather take the e30 cabrio any day....w124 is so common....unless its a cabrio version....then i will go for the w124

Yup, W124 very common unless you are using it to ferry the family around, then I guess the Merc is better. But if its your 2nd or 3rd car, then by all means, please get the E30 cabrio.

The W124 is only a 4 speeder manual with carby woh...
summore the engine sounds like a diesel truck.......cannot compare to the inline sixes.....sweet!

for W124, go for the masterpiece facelift interior and exterior. And go for the 260E which is inline 6 mechanical fuel injection auto.

Cheers,
Eu Jax,

Havent found E30 cabrio yet?

I am a big fan of mercedes cars, and there is a local website for mercedes enthusiasts. Check it out at www.mybenz.org

One of the most active forummers there is a guy with the nickname carbman. And guess what? He drives a W124 200... carburettor, manual transmission. So just the right person for you to ask an opinion.

My opinion is... the E30 cabrio... will give you a much more enjoyable driving experience. That wind in the hair driving experience is unique....ehm.. when the weather is suitable la here in Malaysia. But early mornings and nights are definite times you can enjoy it. Also, immediately after it rains during the day too :D

Downside is, if you do lots of long distance driving, its gonna be noisier and therefore may be more tiring. Having said that, I took mine to Endau Rompin soon after I got it and thoroughly enjoyed myself with the roof down.

W124s have now dropped in value, 20K should be about right for the 200. If you really want a W124 I think I would agree the best compromise would be the 260E. Its smooth, powerful and road tax only 1k as opposed to 2K for the 300E. Both the 4 cylindr engines i.e. 200 and 230E are rough when extended.

If budget allows, the later facelifted models look nicer with nicer interiors generally. E220 4 cylinder is still roug sounding engine, whereas E280 in line 6 is smooth. There were issues with the wiring looms in the engine going brittle and requiring replacements after 3-4 years though.

If I were in the market for a W124, I would unt around for a nice 260E which has been converted to the face-lifted exterior and interior. There are quite a few around.

Hope this helps...

your choice man.. i think there is no way to say which car is right for you. You only know for yourself.

E30 is a small responsive sporty sedan, whereas the W124 is a large luxury car, and with worm and roller steering, you will hardly know where the front wheels are pointing most of the time.

i once bought a w124 300e before as a weekend car. the car is rock solid! everything inside seems to build to last, and guess what? the milage of my car was 270k miles!!! thats equivalent t 430,000 kms... and it glide comfortably on the motorway around 80mph with without a fuss.....

20k for 200 carb, i guess should be ok but remember, thats the basic model you can get for the w124, spec should be very minimal. i personally wouldnt want to touch on that.

and for your reference, you were hunting for a e30 cabriolet, i ll go for the e30 anytime and i believe if you source a good one, in future, value will appreciate whereas the w124 200 might drop even further..

dont get me wrong, i am big mercedes followers as well as a bimmer lover, it all come down to what you fancy and what is the prerequesite for the car you are aqcuiring soon

cheers

btw, i was flipping through motortrader just now and came accross this immaculate maroon w116 280s for 11.5k!!!!! you dont see much of this beauty on the road now these days never mind one as good looking as this...

if you were considering a w124, might as well give a thought about this one! after all, they were crown the world's best car in the 70s, none luxury sedan has claim that title throughout history beside the w116. and they are the forefather for ABS in motor industry.

i would like to have a look but unfortunately, i am not around KL most time

cheers

happy hunting

Dude,

Coming from a guy that has both a merc W124 300 CE-24 and a bmw e46 318i. Get the BMW...simple...straightfoward.

Ah yes, the W116. The Grande Dame. I think it is destined to attain classic status soon.

Thank you all for the quick and fruitful replies :) Appreciate it alot. Well i guess i'll look further into it and maybe learn more and test more W124 before anything. I dont mind extra knowledge even if i didnt settle with one later ;) I love cars anyway.

Its true that 200E is really basic, to the extent that it doesnt even have a power window and power rear mirror :) But its classic i guess. Pretty like the interior though, wood trim through the centre console looks pretty neat.

Again, thanks alot to all who replied to me. Appreciate it very much. Lets see how it goes.

Best regards,

hey eujax

i wouldnt say the W124 is currently enjoying a classic status yet! they are nevertheless good cars and were the best selling executive saloon of all time but the 200 CARB version are not quite a good catch compare to the other model. (200E is one with fuel injection)

if you fancy the interior with wood inlaid, every 124 series came with that, later model even bear the burr walnut which i personally think is more tasteful than the usual zebrano wood.

if you are hunting for something as a weekend car, perhaps should stick to something more rarer or unique ( no doubt 200 W124 are rare) like E30 cabrio, W115, W108/109, W116 etc...assuming you are looking for either of these brand.

on the other hand, if you are looking for something more practical day to day drive without much fuss, the W124/ 126 are good choices even the E34 5 series.

i am a big classic mercedes fan and had owned one of the best looking and most original ( proudly speaking!) mk 1 W115 220 before, the driving dynamic and the experience is not something can compare to with modern daily cars. these car are for people and you to appreciate! ( Was driving a Altis 1.8 at that time)

the W124 ride really well and fell relatively modern even though it was design in the mid 80s. also has a very mercedes touch and handling which was quite familiar with my mum's W202 C200 but way smoother with the powerful 6 cylinder engine. :nyehehe:

Anorak Club Query (but a bit out of topic, sorry): Your UK-registered Merc does not have indicators on the front fenders (near the front door). I think UK-spec W124s have them. Malaysian and German market W124s do not have them. Is yours a German import converted to RHD?
