In addition to what Alvin mentioned, if you want a good body then get those manufactured in the late 80s (M40) as its galvanised and should save you plenty of trouble to get rid of the rust.

Decide what you want to do to it, if you want it to be a weekend cum track car, then get a manual, at least save some work when you are doing your conversion.

Rgds

Well to simplify matters,

1) Get an eta engine, get the motronic ECU and wirings and cylinder head. And if got more $$$ to spend then get a piggy back and complete it with that with an air mass sensor conversion. But will all these, you maybe better off with a M50 conversion :nyehehe: :nyehehe:

That should be the holy grail for the E30!!!
Hi Al

Noted comments..eta engine? hmm..no not going there! sticking to std block.. no I dont want this as a track car..more for a reliable daily commute to work and back..nothing too fancy..

TQ

et5,

You are looking at buying an E30 with this conversion right? The 2.5 head on a 2.0 block is a no no but that should stop you from buying the car. To get an E30 1st thing is the chasis & body, then check the interior. If totall very nice, then look at the engine. M20's are easy to find so no worries & not too costly also. Some members here can even help you with that as they may be doing conversions & will part with their current M20 that is if you want it stock. Now if you want your E30 to be something else, do tell us what is your target & how much is your budget. We can always discuss what the possibilities are over a nice cold one.
Just make sure the body & all is good. Engine is secondary after that.
Hi Alvin

TQ + noted comments on body..might I call on you one day for help in inspecting the car if I spot a decent e30? :p

mainly want the ride for a decent reliable daily commute..spotted this advt in AW and thought I'd ask the advise of Sifu's.

dont want to drift or go gaga power etc ..otherwise would have considered 'twin turbo' conversions!

the search goes on ..

cheers!

:D

1JZ or 2JZ conversion..??? aiya...troublesome. Better get the M40.Reliability is there... :)

it doesn't make any difference....

i think the m50b20 weighs about 194 kg to 198kg , but not sure about the m20, it took 6 average sized people to carry it and move the engine.

so from tj's amount there is a difference of 20 to 24 kg
As I'm givn to understand, 320i m20 weighs 1160kg, generates 110bhp/1000kg & der 320i m50 generates 150hp. :)
Anybody kno quantitatively how much better power/weight ratio is the 320i m50? :yes!:

it should be around 125bhp/1000kg, i maybe be wrong this is a rough estimate and it has a much higher torque output somewhere close to 200nm. doing the conversion alone cost a lot of money. you can ask alvin he has put in a s50 into to his e30, there various parts from other bmws that are needed to do the conversion.

you can go here to find out more

125bhp/1000kg? same as m42 engine in dat case, but heavier? :)

many other factors to consider

1. weight of other parts of engine

2. weight distribution of engine load on subframe

3. dwell angle of engine, if fitted into e30, will it be still in its prime of angle? ( someone can fill in on this?)

4. cooling capacities - will e30 have suficient or overcooling capabilities - engine operates optimum at certain temp n humidity, so changing over may have diffifferent consequences.....

5. etc,etc,etc

wah, teejay, u never cease to amaze me with such technical innuendo for everything u made comments on, right on, man........

p/s what the hell is 'dwell of angle', never know this affects the performance unless u r talkin about the 'moment of inertia' relative to the delivery point..........does this make sense........
