dude your e36 m50 is running on obd1 or II ?? if OBD1 no need to use any chip ....
 
I think some late model (94,95-ish) OBD I cars are equipped with EWS as well. Can't verify, but I remember reading it on forums.
 
I am the one learned the clone key in this forum. For the e36 1996 will have the EWS2 which mean it has the chip inside the key but the remote is separated from the key. Some of the e36 will using the key which remote is with the key itself.

To see your car got EWS is very simple. Take out the drawer or glove box then you will see a small white box after you remote the drawer or glove box.
