Few month before my drive shaft got 'ting ting' sound when change form D gear to R and R to D gear, bring to workshop, asked me change half shaft. Get from chop shop for RM800, only few month, the sound came back and getting bigger and bigger, who meet this before and please advise the best solution. And, how much it cost for the new one?:46: thanks for advise and input!

My car has same problem. My mechanic ask me to use until the drive shaft is out then only change. To change this long shaft is not the drive shaft, it needs to unplug alot of things then only can take it out.

Mind to explain term of until the drive shaft is out, how to know it is out? beside, i c the unplug process, jack up, remove hole exhaust system than can reach ady, half hour will do

Remove the whole exchaust system and the cover, then the drive shaft is ready to go.

Peter2118,
where did you send your car to? Which workshop asked you to change the long-shaft just because it gave ting-ting sound?

It was probably caused by the couplings rubber which can be replaced. The whole coupling itself can be replaced. But there are I think 3 sets of couplings one at the gearbox, one center and 2 at each drive-shafts.

It could be the drive-shafts couplings as well?

You need to change the mechanic not the long-shaft LOL

If any BMW mech cant solve the tinf-ting sound, I suggest you bring the car to a merc workshop. They would probably know how to solve the ting-ting sound or even better if you go to a pick-up or lorry workshop.

cheers buddy

Thanks bro zib, last time change at BM works, Vasu find out the sound is from the middle coupling, he take down the long shaft and i can c the metal contact on the coupling, when put D or R mean the shaft turn clockwise and anticlockwise cause the sound come out!! because the middle coupling in locate at the behind half shaft, so he suggested me to change, but only last few month, haiz....

BM world located at Desa Tun Razak ? I changed 2 rear ABS sensors. Actually only rear right ABS sensor got problem but he suggested to change both. After changed the sensors then meter mulfunction and ABS light still there. Then use the scanner checked again saying that rear left sensor got problem and asked me to change ABS module.

And at the same time another e39 which change both ABS sensors having same problem as well. After that i am very angry then i just left the BM world without change the ABS module. And after that i found out the rear left sensor not plug in. After plug in the sensor then ABS light no more and meter is running !!!!!

At that moment i also asked them to check my long shaft due to it has the ting ting sound but i dont want to let them to change anything. I think is lucky didnt change long shaft or coupling if not dont know what will happen later.

Luckily you ran away fast fast otherwise they ask you to replace your M52 with M5 engine.

the prop shaft are built to last the lifetime of the car. it would be the last thing you should be changing if you have ting tong sound. take a look at your universal join for wear and tear, binding. Also the center bearing.

The only way the shaft needs work will be vibration if it is out of balance and this can be fix quiet easily by some clever machine shops for RM400.

never let these half pass six mechanics change the prop shaft. most of the time, it will quick fix the situation maybe because of less off balance but it will come back worst in a few weeks time as the actual problem was not fixed.

Yes you are right. It really might change M52 to M5 engine later if i still go back to there............hehehheehhe
I think another e39 changed the ABS module at BM World at that day.

Bro Alan,
my case is i change both universal join and the smaller one(dont know how to call it), the sound still appear, the last choice became change shaft!

What about the 'gantung' bearing? Seriously the shaft can only cause vibration. Not noise.

Alan, do u have any contact for "clever machine shops"?

Bro, go to wah seong, junction of genting klang and sri rampai in setapak. Look for kou low, tall guy. Drives a beautiful e38

Wait wait.. Jst realised ting tong sound is when engaged and disengaged.... That is more like wear and too much tolerance in the universal or thrust bearing. Again... Need a clever machine shop to fix it.

what is this gantung bearing bro? something really new to me....

Bimmerholic.... Kakakaka.. I learnt it the hard way. Told the guy to check for me.... He never did it. After the thing kaput.. I ask him how come he din realise its when iasked him to check... He said "you never say check 'gantung' bearing mah... Wah lau.. Wanna go gantung myself!
