Last 2 weeks i serviced my car and change the VCG as well. No more leaking already. But my prob is after today i check from the dipstick my oil is low. I dont know why it consume so much of oil in 2 weeks time. I use castrol magnatec 10w 40. Is the oil not suitable for my car. 318i 2.0 n42. :banghead: Please advice all sifus. If the consumption is always like this, so tired to always top up oil. Is the 10 w 40 consume oil and burn oil a lot?.

Bro,

I m facing the same issue now, same model as yours. It consume 1/2 liter for every 1,000Km & if I rammed more, I ve to top up more.
I ve read some in the fourm (to avoid overhaul, which is last resort), some said/change the valve seal and crankcase valve/oil separator and these seems to work.

Well, I ve to throw this question to the sifus.....can this work?

Thanks

Sbb, have you done the oil separator?, what do you mean the valve seal. Valve cover gasket is it?. I've change mine. Now do some research about the oil separator. Any advice sifus?

Hi bro Ibrahim,

refer to item no. 4 in this link http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AZ72&mospid=47632&btnr=11_3176&hg=11&fg=25. Its a common wear tear item on n42 engines partly also coz of its design as the spring sits on it hence the revs will in time wear it out. If you DIY, just remove your spark plugs and if there are oil on the threads near the firing point then its most likely it. I changed the vacuum pump and spark plug plastic tubing oil seals and it still consumes a little and my plug threads are oily as well so I deduce that its the valve seals that need some work.

For temp solution I believe changing to a thicker oil like 50 / 60 will help.

The CCV wont help much in consumption if its the valve seals, one big example of a failing CCV is blue smoke on occasion during idle. Its not that expensive around RM2++.

hope this helps :)

Thanks Ice duke. U mean after changing all the valve seal ring, it will work?. Last service, i change my valve cover gasket and found that my plug are ok. No oily stain on it. But I didn't check inside the slot. I also done servicing my vacuum pump. Have you changed your valve seal yet?. How's the damage?.

No I havent changed my seals as this requires a top overhaul and may cost around 2-3k as quoted by my mech. On my next oil service I will go for 10w-50 oil and see if it will help for the time being.

For valve seal which also includes top overhaul be prepared to fork out around 2-3k ;)

Kindly update me bro if the new oil have a better consumption. Thanks

Valve seal replacement require top overhaul? Don't think so ya? Just remove the engine top and replace 4 rubber seals only then put a new gasket and apply gum after 1 hour to let the gum/gasket sealant harden you are good to go. cost should be just RM100 for labor charge. Sifu please advice.

hi guys....
im a E39 owner.
used to have missing lubricant problems.
was told that wrong grade of oil is the culprit.
im trying on multigrade one and hoping it would solve my problems.
Voltronic.
very expensive but the effect is AWESOME!
i was offered money back guarantee.
if dissatisfied, drain all oil out and refund cash.
unfortunately, when oil went in, there was immediate pick up and smoother acceleration.
i thought it was too good to be true & so i decided to test it out.
now after 1200km, the car is getting better by the day.
just waiting for signs of oil dissappearing.
hopefully the day will not come.

That cheap?.

Mine last service about 2 weeks ago changed the gasket already. If now i want to change the valve seal, is the gasket which i already installed can be use back or have to change the new gasket after change the valve seal?. Thanks for advice

Bro Ibrahim / Anaksarawak,

The valve seal is the one that sits on the valve that prevents the oil from seeping into the combustion chamber. The 4 rubber seals you are referring to could be just the valve cover seal which is different. A valve seal replacement requires dismantling of the camshaft, valvetronic unit, springs and other components hence the higher labour / parts price as once remove I am sure there are other parts that need replacing which will be done as well. You do not want to open up and just change the seals and tutup balik kan? why do double job? might as well replace whatever is necessary since it is opened already. Hence the 2-3k.

Yes the valve cover gasket can be reuse, baru change la so still lembik no worries :)

Hope my explanation is clear enuf :)

This is location of the valve seal (item 4).

Replacing of valve seal not necessary dismantle the head unless you need to polish/grinding the valve seat. An example here:
http://bmwe32.masscom.net/sean750/ValveStemSealReplacement/ValveStemSealReplacement.htm

The above example have to remove intake manifold because it goes over the valve cover, for N42 and N42, no need. But you need the special tool, the Midlock tool to depress the valve spring to take out the valve tapers.

http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/07/84/27

N42 valve seals, 4/cylinder, 8 for intake, 8 for exhaust, all in 16 pcs.
