Cold engine problem.

BMW 318i e46 auto.Hye people. Newbie here. 1st of all, i do not own any of the cars. Im asking on behalf of my dad. The problem is:-Kalau enjin x cukup panas, kereta xkan masuk gear. It stays on gear 1 only when driving.-I mesti panas kan enjin like 10mins until jarum sampai kt tgh temperature meter then baru dia boleh masuk gear when driving. -Before this my dad pernah hantar kt service centre & ask about the problem. But the solution they gave to my dad is to change the gear box. Anyone can tell me whats the problem? Thanks

Its normal for E46 318i, your car will change to 2nd gear upon almost reaching 1/4 mark on the coolant temp., (which will take approximately 2 minute of slow drive). This feature prevent you from revving your car when engine is cold
