I took my car to bmw specialist A, they changed my alternator charged me more than 1.5K for the new one. I brought my car to specialist B, who take one look and tell me that it is re-conditioned one. I feel cheated by specialist A. Actually need forummers advice, what can I do in this situation? If I bring it back to Specialist A , for sure they will dispute what B says.

Most if not all the alternators sold are re-conditioned units by the manufacturer itself. Its listed on the box itself.

Thing is my car had to be towed to the workshop, dunno what to do already ...

that is why you need to get contact from some of the local shops / chop shops and so on ....

anyway don't feel down .... make this as your leason learned in a hard way ... smile away dude ...

If the price paid is right for recond unit, its not so much on "cheated" but just "misrepresented" only la. I believe a new one would cost a lot more.

For all repairs that cost more than RM500, I always seek 2nd opinion. That's why we join this forum, plenty of such info in the forum.

Always ask for the packaging material for verification. Normally 2nd hand or used part ain't got this proper boxes

I do agree with astroboy point of view:top:

Can call around to some of the BMW stockists to get an idea of what the normal price is for refurb and new alternator. Taking into account normal mechanic profit and maybe northern prices you'll have a better idea of what really happened if you confront the mechanic. You didn't mention what model you're driving, alternator prices vary by model so its difficult to say for sure without more info. I would say though that 1.5k+ for part only seems high if you really did get a refurb.

Don't let it bother you too much though. like you said, your car was dead so your options were limited. Can't really be towing it around town getting estimates. If you find you did get ripped off just try and find a new regular mechanic.

actually..there are brand new alternators for sale and recond ones..for e30 recond is 500 brand new 1200. if the mech conned you by saying its new and charged you for a new one but put a recond one tell him you'll bring him to court la so easy..actually it depends how confrontational you are..if it was me i'd be boiling

Thanks, it's my own thought too... no point in confrontation. It's just one person's opinion against another. Already decided to give up on this particular workshop.

hmm..but its 1.5k man..how can you let the bugger go?!?!?!thats so much of money!well maybe its just me la kan masih student..haha..well im sorry for your loss and i guess its better to look at the bright side of things

Well, it sounds like that's the last the workshop see your face there. Why not let us know the workshop so others don't fall prey the their ill practice.

I don't think there's a case.. because u r obviously told the price before u give them the green light and u have settled the bill signifying u agreeable to the price and accepted service rendered. and u should have inspected the item before installation.

Now its your word against the workshop's. They can say it was new when they installed it. Maybe u did the swap after the job. Can argue until the cow comes home! I would only wish the part that get installed into your car can and will last the estimated life of the price u paid.
