Bro Valkryie,

Thanks for the tips.

Yeah, I fully understand that RM600 is nothing if you want to play ICE. I'll prob settle for a HU from a rep brand.

So, guess that settles what HU to buy. Now, just where to go onli... :D

all oso about the same....

installing a head unit isnt rocket science.... unless you wanna complicate things a lil.... waaaahahahahah.... wanna know??

for instance, you can ask the installer to take the power from your battery direct (please add a small fuse to protect it!)... this will power your head unit better, especially if it has an internal amp built in... so, it will sound better... :nyehehe:

or, you can insist on getting your player flush mounted... i.e. remove the panel, install the player using the original brackets then put back the panel so that the player will not jut out like most cars that i have seen. the advantages of this is that it wud make it harder to steal (cos the thief will now have to remove/break the panel first... and simply it would really look better.... :nyehehe:

if you are a crazy perfectionist, you can also insist that the installer tests the head unit's clip off points using the scoping machine (not all installers have this or in fact know how to use the scope machine). The advantage of scoping is that you will know at which point the head unit clip off i.e. outputs sounds that will damage your speakers.... :nyehehe:

ahhahahhaha.... enuff poisons... **cabuts!!**

p.s. if you buy an al cheapo player and tries to get the installer to do all of the above, he may take your picture and stick it on the entrance to forbid your next attempt to enter his shop.... :getyourfactsright: hahahahahahha!!!

p.p.s. i have done all of the above before!!!

Andrew, if your budget is RM600, then I'd suggest you get a HU from brothers. You could get the entry level Alpine HU but value for money wise, the Pioneer would be a safer bet. And since you are going to replace only the HU, its a fairly simple job.

The e34 is a pretty good platform for ICE, much better than the 3 series. Better insulation, good placement for the tweeters and etc.

I have recently did my ICE installation at KF audio (Aman Suria), amps, speakers, cables and HU. They do a good job but installation costs is higher than brother's, but as I said earlier if you only want to do install a HU, then Brother's is more than sufficient. And you dont need to worry bout setup with an entry level HU since it probably doesnt come with all the bell and whistles like time alignment, bass focus, parametric equalizer and etc.

Rgds

dun "brothers" your car lar.... aiyohhh...
later your wires kena sotonged then jialat ler... your electronics will go koookooooo....

if alpine entry level is wot you wan.... i know just the place. pm me.

Can't quite remember where, but there was an article in last Sunday's CBT, reviewing someone who spiced up his system for RM1k. Quote from the article saying it sounded like an RM6k++ system.

Install HU only. Its a safe bet. If re-doing the whole works then I would recommend KF audio la.

Ah lian, no point getting the entry level 78XX series la, no MP3 and sound also so so only. Unless the 9XXX series, but entry level also no MP3.

unker liew's place is excellent for installation. i have seen him working and his finished work. if i had a beemer like yours, al bundy, i wud go there too. serious. its expensive but money's worth becos they are careful not to scratch your interiors, they do up the wiring tidily and then will help do tuning for free (if buying new setup, not just a head unit).

but other than brothers, there are still many affordable installers that will do the work for a reasonable price. i hear that installation costs for a head unit is rm50, which may be sometimes waived if you buy the head unit from them.

Andrew,

Well, since the requirement is only for an MP3 capable HU, it wud pay to shop around a little. I've nothing against the chaps at Brothers .... but I'd take my biz to some decent shops like KF, Klasse or Sound Quest. Granted that you're not planning spend a few thousands for this upgrade but if you want quality job and decent prices, then head on down to a shop that atleast know what they're doing. I think you'll find a number of decent HU from Eclipse, Alpine, Pioneer that meets your requirement / budget ... look at Sony and Kenwood too if you'd like a bit more bling in terms of design etc.

If you buy the HU elsewhere, then an installation fee of RM 50.00 or so would probably apply. But why take the hassle unless the difference in pricing is a couple of hundred bucks or more. Plus, even if something goes wrong you can always go back to the installer and ask them to get it sorted out.

Ah Lian, how your ol Naka gal doing ?

Cheers,

P.S - The majority of the mainstream manufacturers ... be it Japanese or Americans and Europeans have moved their manufacturing activities to China and other low cost areas. Granted that their upper end models are still manufactured in Japan, EU or US ( very little ) but it most cases, you get what you pay for. Unless we're talking about some real serious stuffs from McIntosh, Zapco, Arc, Genesis, Brax/Helix, Phass, Sinfoni and the likes.

Cheers,

Yeah ... saw that in CBT. It was done at Klasse Audio ... there's a few of our members who are regulars there. Sounds like a RM 6K system ... that's pretty subjective from one person to another. In ICE, there's no replacement for displacement really. You get what you pay for ... the last piece of the puzzle being the art of install and tuning. But for the budget specified, Klasse had put up a very decent install from what I saw in that article.

Yes ... want to know more, PM this Pseudo ICE Queen and she'll tell you more. Wei, you stopped terrorizing the ICE shops in Klang Valley already aah these days ? ** Cabutz !!! ** :p

Cheers,

Hahah... ok ok... I get de pic... dun "brudder" the car...

Can someone pls PM me directions to KF, Klasse or Sound Quest?

May pop by this weekend...

Thanks again fellas! :D

Since I'm not a local, you can contact Bundy or Stephen for directions to KF and Affan for directions to Klasse. Sound Quest in in Taman Segar, Cheras - same row with the Maybank near Cheras Leisure Mall. But your best bet would be either KF or Klasse - they carry a variety of Alpine/Eclipse and Pioneer models respectively.

Happy hunting !

Cheers,

A bit late, but I might as well put my 2cents in.

A long time ago (circa 2001), I bought a Sony HU with a 6CD changer at Brader's in Kelana Jaya (before they became an Emporium of Bling). I had it installed in my then '96 Satria (nice car, no matter what people say).

Anyhow, it was ... *shite*. Had to go to another shop to redo all the wiring again. I don't recall exactly, but I think one of the speakers lost sound two days into the install or something like that.

Dunno if they're better now, but somehow I doubt it.

Another thing, since you're not going to be an ICE man, you might want to try a Sony. Cheap and cheerful. I had a CDXF5500 installed in my E36 for a while. Bought it mainly because it was black with red leds. OK la ...

Now got a Naka CD300, fuiyoh ... Iron Maiden never sounded so good. Did it *near* KF Audio at Aman Suria ... not at KF Audio, but two doors down. :D

where ever u install make sure it is not from the audio shop located at Damansara Perdana (Opposite Perdana Condominum).. if not mistaken also called KK Lau.. can't forget my experience until today. After spending days to install my system on my car there was always this 'aeroplane' sound. According to him, it is due to the amp and all bmw cars have wiring problem (duh.. how stupid does he think a customer can get).

I got fed up and went straight to Brothers located at Kelana Jaya and asked them if they could eliminate this 'aeroplane' sound. Took them less than 10 minutes and only paid RM20.

Also another advise is make sure the place is familiar with bmw cars as some interior panels cannot be pulled out otherwise the clips will break, some has to be slid out. If the installer does not know this, it may cause you hundreds of dollars or more to replace the interior panels.

you can get a alpine mp3 HU for about rm550, sony ones around the same price can get cheaper.....but these prices were 6 months old.....they should be cheaper now.

Get it fixed so cheap and so fast? I think he put a filter in your car.
Your high frequency will be cut off and overall sound muffled. But it does take care of aeroplane sound.
