AB is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. see http://joy.autobavaria.com/joyful-events-list.php As part of its celebrations it has a Performance day when you can test drive their cars or sample their drivers training program when they take you off site and allow you to go through a series of exercises eg emergency breaking, slalom and single lane change guided by the drivers training instructors. I went along with 2 friends. It was real fun. Even got name card box and polaroid photo as souvenier. Thanks AB. Happy Anniversary!

i went to the one AB had at Segambut. You are right about having fun.afterdriving their demo car,i can say that i am truly impress with my ride. Now im looking forward to go to any performance day organise by bmw

another good way to learn about your car is to go for a properly organised trackday like hpc. as a newbie, you get free instruction from trained instructors in sepang. www.hpcevents.com

you do it in your own car of course, which is the best way to learn. and no, i do not own hpc, or have any interest there. better than driving around in a carpark.

Hi Gary,

I beg to disagree that driving in car parks are in any way inferior to the track, not at least in terms of fun, enriched driving knowledge and experiences (proper braking, evasive techniques, oversteer, understeer and etc) and learning the proper driving techniques.

Ashman55, nice meeting you :)

Cheers

theres nothing wrong with driving around in carparks, i've been doing that all my life ;)
but there is definitely more to driving than just carparks, and eventually, imho(with my limited experience), if you wanna improve further, you need to get out of that carpark.

Well in terms of learning to be a better driver, I think one will learn as much about driving in a car park. If one doesn't know how to apply brakes properly, or have experiences of what it is like to be in a car that is getting into an understeer or oversteer situation, then what happens when one go over the limit at the track???

In BMW's driving school, learning to drive at carparks constitutes Level 1 (BASIC) and Level 2 (Advanced) of the syllabus. Once participants are certified and passed these two Levels, only will they be allowed to attend LEVEL 3 (Intensive) which constitutes performance driving on the track and Level 4 (Perfection) will also be on the track (Nordscheilfe) :)

So, as you can see the whole program is actually very well structured and unique, afterall this program was the first of its kind and has been around since 1977!!

However, I'd enjoy driving around cones more than on the track, more so if the gymkhana layout is interesting and challenging :)

Cheers bro. :)

well.. i cant say i know much about driving ;) since i've never attended any driving courses in my life, except for the one where I got my license that is. :top:

just curious, why haven't we seen bmw's entering an event like GRA, which is probably the only gymkhana/autocross event in malaysia right now i think. its properly organised, with safety in place, plus its sanctioned by the motorsports association of malaysia. i think its probably the best place to put into practice the skills one learns from what you've mentioned above and maybe pickup a few more even. :)
