I have a BMW that is ticking over but has no power.there was a problem with the water pump witch caused it to over heat, but that was sorted, now it really doesn't want to move. What could this be down to.The head gasket is fine. The car will move put its jumpy stopping and starting with like power surges and drops, almost like an idle air valve problem. Iv'e never had a problem with it before. Hope I can get feedback and suggestion... Thanks!!

licia.. first is what type of model. year is your car.. Different engine have different characteristic. So we need to know in order to help you.

You mentioned that you have a water pump problem which caused your engine to overheat. When it happen, did you topped up the water when the engine is HOT.

How do you determine the head gasket is fine. Any compression done on it for individual cylinder.

Note: when you open the top head for inspection, it is normal to change the whole set of gasket.

ICV only affect your idling speed but it does not affect power.

Check the radiator when the engine is cold. Open the radiator cap and rev the engine to high speed (around 3000 rmp). Do you see any bubbles when the water is returning back..

btw.. pls introduce yourself in the newbie to beak the ice.. cheers.

A jumping start n stop problem eh? after overheating. hmm, try n check ur compression ratio.i dun think tht spark problem would give such problem. spark problem would give u misfiring issues. usually after overheating, the compression ratio should b checked n also d valve conditions. is this a diesel or petrol engine?

Actually if one or more spark plugs is worn out, fouled, or simply not connected it would give symptoms as described (can idle/tickover but jerks and extreme lack of power)
