Dear All, i used to pour Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 into my 730Li N52 engine. Recently i tried using BMW Long Life 04 5W 30 bought from Bavarian Auto. the findings are as follows1) Car appeared lighter and smoother.2) engine sound louder, especially when travelling at above 100km/h and then release the gas pedal.3) the engine service notice dropped extremely fast from 15,000km to below 1,900 within 1 month, which means i would need another service soon !!!! while actual distance travelled is only 1,800km.Anybody has tried using the BMW Long life-04 5W 30 before with similar effect especially 3) above which is surprising!!!!

Bro, i think for the no 3, might be something else, not because of the engine oil type. btw, what mileage are u now?

Bro EL118...
BWM Long Life04 5W 30 is a fully synthetic oil so its thinner..
Like bro yazmeen said no 3 may be sonething else...
What is your mileage now?

Aku ada stereng lori....ko adaaa....

5w 30 is 'lighter' viscosity than 5w 40 so what you experience with lighter feel and louder is normal...

LL04 if im not mistaken is for diesel engines...for petrol use LL01...

Why not just change to semi synthetic 10W-40 think will reduce the engine noise...my 2.5cents....

you mean there is viscosity difference between full syn 10w40 and semi syn 10w40? at what operating condition? if that is the case then the oil viscosity grading make no sense at all...

Bro 10W-40 is semi synthentic..
0W/5W-40 is fully synthentic..
So there is diff in viscosity...my 2.5cents...

The difference would be during cold start up only hence the xW-xx grading ... On normal operating temp however the weightage of the oil would still be in the 40 range regardless whether it fully or semi synthetic (there's more to it actually). In that respect no point recommending for a semi syn 10w40 ... Just go back to 5w-40 fully synthetic which is better for newer engine like the N52.

My current mileage is 68,000km.

Any idea causing it?

BA said is for petrol.. My main query now on no 3, any idea?

No 3 fault maybe got problem with the sensor. or IKE reading faulty...try to scan first and check any error code for the IKE

I think bmw engine oil is too thin in viscosity.5w in winter and 30 on normal operating temp.the engine oil become vapour faster than 40 viscosity.so need to change engine oil faster la..(my opinion only) maybe i'm wrong..

on no 3, its hard to confirm as n52 has no dipstick to check if the sensor works...the oil level and cbs sensor is some sort of a capacitor and the oil is the dielectric...there is possibilty that the sensor is faulty so pls get the car diagnose if there is any error code on this sensor...if no error, you can confirm by draining the oil into a clean container (if u want to reuse) and measure the amount of oil left...if im not mistaken it shud be about 6.5l to 7l for n52...this is to confirm if the sensor works...

i used only castrol 5w-30 LL01 oil on my ex e60 with n52 engine for 130k km without any issue and topping up of oil with 7k km service interval...

my opinion, its the oil...the sensor and the cbs algorithm might not be compatible with the LL04 oil which is low saps engine oil...which could provide a different reading on this 'capacitor' sensor

Updates:
Scaned with no error. Now i suspect manual reset cannot work, as my brake pad service light also pop up after 2,000km. (i used OBC manual reset the engine oil service to 15,000km as well as brake pad service to 35,000km).

I have asked mechanic to reset both engine service and brake pad service, now monitoring the outcome.

Save for the service light. The car now save fuel by approx 5% with the lighter oil, and sound smoother when idle. (but roar louder when high speed).
