BMW e46 m3 Smg problem

My friend's e46 m3 showed fault code: 056 on period, Hydraulic unit. So what's the problem? Car still can move but gear will go free for few seconds sometimes then come back again.

sounds like the SMG hydraulic pump's accumulator issue..guess the accumulator can't maintain the pressure when driving..
some will replace the whole pump..some will just replace the accumulator which is a cheaper fix..
seems this is a known issue on SMG..go to a reputable workshop bro..they should be know..

That's what i would suggest bro..go for a cheaper fix 1st..
i think the accumulator's part# is 21532229716..
Pump's part# is 21532229715
Call Bavarian Auto 03-40433888 to enquire the prices..at least you can budget..
you can also buy it from them and fix it at a reputable workshop
But, make sure you confirm the culprit before you buy it..

Depending how long you plan to keep the car. Brand smg hydraulic actuator is not going to be cheap. Used ones might not be reliable. Good luck

The smg hydraulic pump can be repair, its the electric motor actually the culprit.
