Bmw E46 318i N42 Engine problem

Recently while driving, the car suddenly jerk once, battery indicator lights up (1 second), but continue to run.Then yersterday the car decide to stall (engine mati) with a maintenence lights up.What is the possible problem with my car? Pls advice......Mine is a BMW 02' facelift version, 2lit.Thanks for your comment.
