my take on this is...

what or whichever model you choose.... maintenance is a MUST...

as for me... i just got a 6 potter 2.0 E46 and loving the drive...
as for the power and maintenance it is affordable..
maintenance also you need to know how often and how far you travel per day.
Always good to keep as much money for the maintenance "save it for a rainy day"

i checked out quite a lot of cars before finalizing on one. took quite a number to Ah Meng to check.. until before i own a bmw i already know where to repair... LOL... but checking of the car is important as i almost got a car which has gone through a major accident. lucky that i insisted on checking the car at a mech.

hi bros...

thanks so much for all advise,, really appreciate the BMH ( Bm Hospitality )

i am getting this car like a fun car, everyday use car, dont need press pedal to potong queue in highway or shooting 180km/h ....just normal less maintainence car , i am happy liaoo

just back from oversea after 10years not in malaysia, never own a car before ...so i dont wan to have nightmare for my 1st car.

got few Pm's from helpful bro to get 320 rather than 318. basically still need to understand more, from what i read in the Sticky Post,,,..seldom hear engine problem, just read alot of Expansion Tank, Fuel pump , water pump, lower arm etc change....

and many bros said maintaining a bmw is about the same cost with Honda/ Toyota...i hope this is true...what u guys things..those own both continental and sushi makers car.

and some said bmw is more expensive to maintain than MerC

are u only looking at 318i any interest in 325i. The reason I asked is because a forumer bkslee just bought a e46 325i Msport with very low mileage from a dealer friend. And the dealer just brought in another 1 unit with very low mileage abt 28k. Don't doubt the mileage as these are car from Langkawi. Year 2005 original Msport going for about 120k. You may look at bkslee thread for his car photo. The car that I mentioned looks identical, same colour same spec.
I am no dealer and have no monetary interest in any form, just a fellow BMW lover. good luck

hi bro gerald,,,i think i will get a 2.0 car ...325 bit too high spec for me...my budget was actually 70k, then upgrade to 85k, then now 105k...need to keep 15k as servicing fee.

i prefer original non modified bmw,,,,like its ori look.

btw, do you guys bring e car to auto bavaria to inspect during purchase?? what are the percentage of the car trustable via inspection by AB ? or just use normal shop to inspect also can?

Aiks.. how come suddenly got my name there.. hehe.

Btw Keong, if u ask me, between 318 and 325, i will definitely go for 325 due to the engine tech differences between a 4potter and a 6 potter. ofcoz more power means more cost for maintainance. But then if compare the maintenance cost between a camry/accord and e46, they are more or less the same. Just that there are few common prob/parts that need more attention such as radiator and engine oil leakage which mainly due to excessive heat generated by the BMW engine. Japanese car engine are generally cooler then Bmw engine, therefore their engine parts can last a little bit longer.
However if getting a 2nd hand bmw, expect another 3-10k for repair. So pls drive the car to a well known BMW workshop for inspection and ask for rough calculation for the things that need to be replace. Then nego with the dealer for more discount.
Good luck in your search for ultimate pleasure... I get orgasm every time i press hard on the pedal.. woohoo...

I think AB will check for u for a fee. For my case, thanks to Gerald, he brought me to his regular workshop for a full inspection. He even call up his regular paint-shop guy to check whether the car had any accident b4. The workshop check all electronic parts using a computer and check the engine casket and under carriage for any leakage and wear&tear. Testdrove for few runs to make sure the engine and GEARBOX in good running condition. Gearbox is common prob for BMW too. Check your milleage, if it's above 150km, test the gear properly. BMW recommend maintenance free for gearbox, meaning nonid to service or change gearbox oil. I'm abit skeptical on all maintenance free gearbox, doesnt sound logical at all. Anyway, no worries, plenty of BMW gearbox expert out there, repair cost is cheaper then sushi car.

3-10k spare depends on your car condition. For my case, I spend about 1.8k for full service, changed casket due to minor leakage, changed the thermostat, changed K&N airfilter, windscreen washer pump, changed the lower arm bush and front breakpad (only slightly expensive then my Honda city!!! and yet ppl says honda maintenance is cheap). And now the car is running like new.
However 2 things which I havent do yet, service my gearbox (45km) now... and my side mirror, the adjustable motor koyak dy, can live with it for now using manual adjustment. hehehe

hehe.. re-assure our bro ma, later he scare off how? lost 1 kaki liao.. Anyway, i know a few la so to me is plenty lor. I say some sushi ma, some sushi gearbox cannot repair one and must change new one which cost 10-20k, definitely cheaper lor.

Here's my experience of owning a 2004 318i for the last 5 year:

I use it as an everyday car and hardly pushed it to its limit and I service it every 6-8k. I change/service parts before it starts to give bigger probems.(especially common problems for this model). Had a few minor oil leaks in the last 2 years but they were fixed promptly.

Its a great car for me and just like one forummer said, you just need to have RM1k extra per month for the additional cost.

My headache happened recently where I had to spent more than 7k in 3 months after getting one problem after another. It started with the oil leak, radiator leak, oil sump leak. I thought thats where my troubles will end but after a week, there was another mysterious oil leak which the workshop had to keep my car for 1 day to identify where it was coming from.

Anyway, that was the final straw. I decided it was time to change cars and went to the showroom the next day and booked the 323. Th enext day, my stearing started to have a knocking sound. :(

Conclusion : No matter how well maintained a car is, once its reached the 5 year mark, a lot of things will start to give way.

If you can, go for the 6-potter!

Just my 2cents

Cheers
Chief

I would agree with Chief, 318i N42/N46 engine will require no less maintenance than a 6 potter engine and I have listed before the causes of oil leak alone for this engine before. Just check the E46 maintenance threads and you'll know what I mean.

But if you decided either 318 or 325, just prepare at least RM10k aside in case of anything which I must say it will be drained in first year of ownership. At the end, it'll give joy of driving when everything on the car works properly (can't get that feeling from Civic or Lancer).

Bro geoffreylee, ur 'Malaysian made' sushi car still got ah? hehe

bros..anyone purchase 2nd hand bmw and without KENA bad experience with the car? can pls share their experience ?

if 05 car e46 also will give problem with 100k, then i might be looking at other options of cars alraedy...maybe camry is my next choice ..since i dun wanna headache getting oil leak, gear box issue...etc..

someone pull me back to BMW pls..haha:rock:

Definitely new car will be better bro but BMW will offer you the rear wheel drive ultimate feeling. If am allowed, I would suggest for you to get a Camry or Accord (New) and when you have spare cash get the nice E36 328 Cabrio or E36 328 CI.

The E36 are fun and cheerful car on track like Sepang while you can allow your visiting friends to drive it around when they are in town.

I owned a E46 2.0i few months ago. Since i was not a pro but i was the BMW fans BEFORE i have a ride on it. I bot a 2nd hand UDM and i spent RM30k to repair and recond it in 5 months time. The problem is after spent, i still cant own a real BMW as which i aspected before, as my car is still having lots of problems day by day. After the consideration and the comparation in between Accord and Camry in 2 months time, i decided to sell it off and get a new Honda Accord 2.0VTi-L, at least it is the new one, no headache with the repair, and now i ride on my new Accord for 20 days ade. What i want to share is, actually BMW is a very nice car, the problem is we need to be very lucky to get a problem less 2nd hand UDM, or we need to be a pro who may confirm that the UDM is nice and problem less, or we shud get the new UDM if affordable to avoid from those problems, and doesnt matter that how much is our income to own and to maintain the UDM. I'm now running my own biz, thats why i upgraded myself from Waja to BMW few months ago. Due to i was so unlucky to own a super problem bimmer and i hate to send my to the mech very often, so i just sell it off. If you feel that you are not so sure with the UDM which you like to get is in the good condition, lets send it to the mech to confirm that it is fine in diagnostic and mechanial sector which cudn't show with fault code. This is my experience which i wud like to share.

P/S: this is just my personal experience to share and doesnt matter to criticize the BMW, as i will come back to BMW few years later (But confirm will get the new one and not the 2nd hand).

Regards,
EricS
