A lot of high praise have been heaped upon the new generation of BMW diesel engines particularly the 3l version. There are also the 2l version and I believe the 4.4 version too. Most of these engines redline at 4,500rpm.BMW entered the X5 3.0d in last year's Paris-Dakar Rally. Just wondering, can the engine's redline be increased? Can more bhp be extracted to achieve better top speed?

OSfI think its possible. If you look at most tuners these days like Dinan or ACS, the can further in increase by 15% ~ 20% on the BHP just by chipping it. Actually the gain is far more with the chip compare to the petrol version. As for the redline, i've not seen anything on that. Hmmm must check liao

15-20%??? The E46 320d is rated 150bhp so roughly that means increase of 20-30bhp. For the 204bhp 330d that means increase of around 30-40bhp. Still not enough for a racing engine leh (power craze!!!) hehehe :p If the 320d can do around 200bhp and the 330d around 300bhp and get more engine rev (another 1,000-1,500 rpm?), it will be very fun to drive on track! No doubt increasing the rev will shorten the engine life.

But with the torgue should be fun though plus for enduro darn good cause no need to fill gas to many times. Why ar? You having evil thoughts izzit

Ah thermodynamics again, OSFlanker you should study engineering than finance lar...you sure make a good automotive engineer eheheee...Back to your question, well low engine revs is one of the characteristic of a diesel engine. Similarly, 2 stroke engine will generally be able to rev higher than a 4 stroke engine. Hell yeah, my RC engine can rev to 43,000 rpm while a BMW F1 engine barely reaches 20,000 rpm (and its the highest in F1).Maybe with the advance in electronics and metallurgy in the near future can further increase the rev limit of diesel engines, but they will never surpassed those of 2 and 4 stroke engines.AL

My 2 cents : I guess the diesel engines will lose out on rev to petrol engines my a high margin . Maybe if it was a diesel class where all diesel engines are competing the BMW diesel engines could outshine ..cheers

diesel engine are not made to rev high due to the combustion method used.... fuel mixture is ignited by high compression instead of ignition spark (as in petrol engines) even at 4,500 rpm, oil burner will start to feel strained. However, with good torque it can be as competitive on track as the petrol versions.

whatever la...Petrol engine...or the Die Sel engine...as long as it's cast iron...I love it!!!!!!!too bad the M54 shortblock are alluminiums.....if it's cast iron ,that's enough for me.

Harlow...Mr.Kookabura lover, wanna try my Yellow Super Coupe 5.7 direct injection Monster ah?????comes with ABS too.(Air Braking System).

E92 320i (2010) or E92 320d (2010) ???

Hi..I am planning to bring back a bmw coupe m sport from the UK..but not sure which two of these models 320i or 320d is a better bet..

Both models comes with risk..
1. E92 320i - there is a very big and long thread in e90 post forum uk,(http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136258)
discussing about what looks to me like a faulty engine design (4cylinder) mainly issue with fuel injectors/coil packs, ECU, software etc

2. E92 320d - there is nothing major discussed with regards to this model's engine reliability in e90 post forum uk.. but there is risk of using Malaysia Diesel 2M on a UK E92 320d engine (especially with the newer models with efficiency dynamics as these is made for Diesel 3M/4M)..I have been trying to look for any major complaints with regards to diesel incompatiblity but could not really find one..really hope if someone can tell me about their experience/problems/issue using a diesel engine from UK/Europe (which is specifically made for Diesel 3M/4M)..

I would really appreciate oppinions on which car is the least risky to bring to Malaysia E92 320i (2010) or E92 320d (2010) urgently as I am planning to purchase it next week.

The 320d is ok with our euro 2 diesel-must remove PDF though-ask the UK mechanics to remove it for u.

What about the X5 30d (UK spec)? Since BMW Malaysia is selling the BMW X5 30d, does it mean that UK spec BMW X5 30d will also work for Malaysia diesel after removing the PDF? Thank you.

530d

Anyone know which bimmer specialist have experience on cleaning injector, TFT (mean cleaning the exhaust system, removing PDF (need to reprogram the sofyware??).....

None of the outside mechanics are good with the 320d-its a damn new car. Or even the 530d. Better get work done at official BMW dealerships.

you can try BMWorld in Desa Tun Razak. I've seen them do countless 3, 5, 7 and X series. car comes in with big ass cloud of black smoke. goes out almost like a petrol car. welcome to the wonderful world of diesel in m'sia :)

I think many can clean or replace the injectors but no one would be able to reprogram the ECU in order to "localise" the car. There are many grey diesel cars that are stucked in East Malaysia. If you want to buy a diesel car, buy from authorised dealers or else just be prepared to keep replacing injectors and DPF till 2014 when the local diesel meets Euro4 standard.

chief...hopefully in Boleh-land, the 2014 date doesn't get pushed back further. anything is possible in boleh-land!! hehehe....

btw, saw you driving the other day. car was under 80kmh, so maybe tot your wife was driving :D :D too slow for you....
