Need some expertise comments...Besides uphill and downhill, i am using D2 to limit the "over frequent shifting" (up and down) of the gear when traffic congestion, is it right to do so?? What is the pro and cons?Someone said that if we stop for more than 30 sec"??", we should shift to N rather than D4, anyone have more specific details on this?? Either way creates any impacts to engine mounting or transmission box ?? Thanks.

I am no expert and my judgement is based on logic.

There is actually no right nor wrong. It is OK to use D2 in traffic. It is OK to use D2 to go uphill. Both cases is becoz we do not want the gear to hunt.

Shifting into and out of D will cause damage....in the looooong run,as the gear train ,prop shaft, diff gearbox, drive shaft,cv joint will be jarred at every shift from D/N/D,albeit ever so softly.

General rule is....to drive,select D and leave it there.When drive is over,select N or P.

i agree, it is cheaper to change brakepads rather than the auto gearbox.

Yup. I agree with moots and dvng.

I use D3 in my Honda in the city. I dont bother with N in short traffic jams.

Mmmmm......never go for D2 before in the traffic jams.
Need to try tomorrow in the jam at Jln Tun Razak near old airport. B)

Me very seldom use those lower gears in town drive.
And, whenever the engine idling, it is a habit to change to N.
Sometimes before reaching the red traffic light, sudah tukar to N.
Don't know good or a bad habit la....

You brought up 2 discussions.

The second being whether to leave in D when stationary (e.g at traffic lights - 30 secs) or to shift to N.

In this particular issue, there are 2 schools of thoughts. The first being leave in D, save the pressure valves (in the gearbox) and cheaper to change the brakes due to higher wear. The second is put it to N, relieve the gearbox internal pressure and save the brakes but increase the pressure valves wear. I am afraid, the answer is - The jury is still out on this one, this is an age old discussion that has been argued since the invention of the automatic gearbox and noone has the answer till today and each sholl will present their point of view.

Your first question on whether it is OK to use D2 in traffic. My personal opinion, is that it should be OK to the gearbox. I suspect that you will not get to 3rd gear in a stop start situation. Your real damage is your pocket - in higher than normal fuel consumption, becaus eyou are holding a lower gear than called for, and higher wear and tear of your drivetrain when you slow back down.
Cheers

Thanks for all the reply.... will have a serious thought of all opinions... thanks bros.
