Anyone using Petronas Synthium engine oil? In particular, Synthium 3000. Going to service/change engine oil soon and am thinking of trying out Synthium 3000 (5w40). Currently using Ravenol VSI 5w40, from Germany.

Yes, I have used the Syntium 3000 before. But it's getting to be rather expensive almost RM 200 per 4 litre pack. Now, I'm using Q8 Excel 5w/40 which I felt the engine is smoother.

i am using the same oil. was using Mobil-1 before. cannot tell any difference. but it is a bit pricey.

Engine oil for 328 to recommend?

Thanks for the reply. I just check with petronas station and some dealers, yes it's expensive. 1 lit bottle is already RM51 at petronas stations.

What engine oil should I use? My current Ravenol is good but it's not easily available. Whats more, the workshop does not sell in 1 litres, only the 5 litres. I used Q8 before, but the semi-synthetic, and it's not bad. Again, it was not easily available. I used to use Castrol Magnatec but now that it's under BP, even scared to used coz might mix.

I'm looking for fully-syn oil and need 6.5 to 7 lit every oil change (2.8 engine). Where to get Q8 oil now and do they have 1 litres bottles, other than the standard 4 lit?

no reply?

Can anyone recommend any full or semi synthetic engine oil of Xw50? Plan to try this viscosity for my 10 year old engine. So far I see Q8 F1 10w50 is a potential. Not sure if 328i can take 15w50. Any comments?

Bro,
As a rule of thumb, for older engine (more than 100,000km), it's recommended to use thicker oil 10W/50 or 15W/50.

Just saw this thread..

I want to share that now AB SC is pouring in Synthium3000 to all the BMWs that go in for servicing. And samples was sent to Germany for testing and it passed and been approved!

Many were saying older car should use thicker oil. How thick is thick? How old is old?

My understanding is if the car has been using thin Full synthetic since day one, it should keep using it until the day where the owner feel the engine node is loud and that's the sign of looseness, wear and ageing despite the better protection offered by fully synthetic oil. I believe it should be well over 200k km. Remember the Mobile 1 advertisement?

plant, U click the "Customer Benefit" tab and read the "disclaimer":

~ Ultimate engine wear protection at extreme driving conditions especially for the SAE 0W-40 grade to prolong engine life.

Are they trying to tell the customer something? READ BETWEEN THE LINES.. :D

Astroboy

I don't get your point. Can't read between the lines.
My understanding is that both types of lubr has its advantage.
Anyway, I change my engine oil at every 10k.

Thinner oil offer less protection though engine runs lighter which is good for pickup and FC.. Good luck!

If u do not intend to keep your car for very long like pass to the next generation.. then no problem la.. that's the next owner's problem.. :D

Still u should be able to clock at least 200k km on the engine lar.

Thanks Astroboy, got it.. so the advert is consistent then. If you want a longer engine life, use 0-40W and which is slightly thicker.

These are premium lubr. The most expensive in Kedai Mesra at rm223 for 4 liters. I would not think 0-30W will shorten your engine life if you change it every 10k. Even if you use the thickest lubr but change it every 25k, don't think it will prolong your engine life. Furthermore, the ads says it suposed provide exceptional engine cleanliness. Thus, protection is there but then it should has its limits.

Quote from kedai mesra web site:
Boost engine power and torque for better engine response and acceleration
Excellent fuel economy benefits especially for the SAE 0W-30 grade.
Ultimate engine wear protection at extreme driving conditions especially for the SAE 0W-40 grade to prolong engine life.
Exceptional engine cleanliness - protects against engine sludge and varnish deposits.
Resists viscosity and thermal breakdown even in the severest service for longer drain capability.
Excellent cold engine starting - minimize friction and wear at start-up.

I will try the 0-40 soonest possible... :D

I always think of cars as family member and yes, its "planned" for generations to come.. :D though it seldom happen because itch over new model upgrade... so have to sell.. :D so benefited the next owner lor.. :(

You're a good man astroboy...
"duty of care" to your car will do you justice.
When you are selling your E90, let me know...

I find my E90 user manual contain very minimal Technical info. No information on engine spec and output.. :( How many cylinder I have or CC also never mention in the manual.

There's no mentioning of engine oil viscosity recommendation, it only ask u to get back to BMW service center to get oil change.

Aiyaa... even if they do specify engine oil viscosity, it will be in a diagram form with temperature range.. so u get to choose ur range according to your climate... crap la! Never see this info in JDM or Proton manual meh.. :D

So redbaron, can u find out what's Petronas's engineer's comment on 25k km oil change interval practiced by BMW? Would it contribute sludge? Do Petronas produce "LifeTime" lub too? :D

If its some corporate conspiracy, just PM me would do. I promise I would tell others.. :D
