Any advice if I should replace my 325i's engine?

Hi,I am a newbie here. Just like to seek advice from forummers here what I should do next. Recently, my wife drove my 325i E90 thru a flooded road. The car stalled and was brought to BMW service center. They took out the engine and found the one of the pistons was broken. The service center asked to change the engine, and they are going to import one in. The cost quoted was really high - almost 50K plus. :-(I am not a expert in this area. Is there any alternatives? Should I change a new engine? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

the same job would cost less than half the price, outside. As paul said, get a used, overhauled engine. But strange that based on one piston gone, why replace the whole engine?

Crank shaft can be bent!! They asked to change the engine cos they want an easy job as usual. These buggers never fix stuff. They just replace the whole component. You don;t hear F1 cars throwing away the engine away. They fix em cos they're fixable.

Normally you'll need a top overhaul gasket, One full piston liner kit and a couple of bits and pieces. It should be fine afterthat but most likely they'll scare you with stories that it can;t e done and other thingy may crop up. otherwise tread in your engine and drop an imported with a log card in. Most pronto way of solving it!!
