I left my E60 in the garage for the weekend while I drove another bigger vehicle to KL in order to carry some bulky stuff back... This morning when I started my engine, the iDrive showed me exactly this message shown below:"Active Steering FaultSteering behaviour altered.Steering wheel may be at an angle.Possible to continue the journey.Steer with care!Have the problem checked by the nearest BMW Service."I didn't even touch the car for the weekend. And it was perfectly normal at the time I parked my car into the garage before I left. Then this msg popped in my iDrive as I started the car. I tried to switched off the engine for a while before starting it again... but the problem still persists! Anyone facing this kind of problem too?? Any recommendation before I resort to the final action, which is taking my car to the service centre???

thule, i encounter similiar problem few months back soon after the servicing done (change oils, etc. etc). drove for about 15km then masuk pot holes and all tis crap come out in iDrive to alert me (exactly same with wat u shown here from my iDrive). then i panickly call back my mechanic n question him. he ask me to re-start the engine n up-to-date i have no more error in iDrive. its either the computer jam or couldnt recognize some allien object / parts out of sudden. hope u solve ur prob n do update here constantly. i will be interesting to know wat exactly happen to ur ride. good luck

bro thule,
i remember somewhere on e60.net that this bug can be fix by turning the steering all the way to left and then all the way to right 2 click or 2time something like that.

else try reboot the idrive press vol knob + 2 eject button ( yours i remember is jap spec so the eject cd and eject md button ) to reboot the idrive.

was curious so check my old doc its.

on the car then turn the steering wheel full lock to the left, then full lock to the right. Then he centered the steeing wheel and switched the car off and on again. Problem solved and the Active steering works perfectly again.

or battery / fluid for the hyrdro

see if it work

BMW Active Steering is commonly fault quite easily...

I had mine changed at RM 7k...

Interest to know when you recover from it... RM 7k cost me a bomb, and according to my mech, it is very common for E60s

ive had this problem before and believe it or not, everytime you restart the car, it went away.

so i could never replicate the problem for Sapura Auto.

turns out it was the "steering angle sensor" that was faulty.

was a relatively cheap fix compared to lancelot's RM7k!

hope it works out fine and cheap for you.. :)

yeah... I actually turned the steering to the left and then turned off the engine before re-starting... thank God that it really worked! Saved me RM7k to repair the steering :D

hey guys,

arghhhh.... i am having the same problem on my car now. just went through some water earlier as the road was slightly flooded. now the steering is giving me a headache. its fast turning all of a sudden and slow as hell at another time. there;s no fault message from the screen. call my mech but he is new to my m6 and never handled one before, so i need a new one in a hurry. you guys got any ideas where i can have it fixed in a hurry, as i called sapura and was told its gonna take some time just slot me in. anyone tried ingress at damansara? service ok?

let you car dry up first. it could be just a wet or worn drive belt or even a failing drive belt tensioner that is slipping because of the water.

i hav this problem and the SC told me that it is due to the sensor in the rack and pinion and will cost me RM14K. That sensor can be replaced. I got this inspected at Lee Motor Alor Star. Want to get second opinion from AB service center.

I hv read other probelm and most of them said it was due to the steering angle sensor and can be replaced.

Sounds scary. Is it common among E60's or any specific build like mostly UK or Japan specs are affected?

Nothing to scare...I got tip from our VP....I save the $$$$$$$$$...just like simple as D.I.Y...put the key....ON the key...( dont start your car)...wait until 1 minutes...You can see the result....indication gone....and off the key and start your car normally...

Let me add in one more method, wait around 25 min if it doesnt work on 1 min..and you will hear your steering rack rotating. Once it back to the position.....case close and patiently wait for the next round..

No need to press the accelerate pedal ???

Just drove home my E60 4 days ago and facing the same problem..

"Active Steering Fault
Steering behaviour altered.
Steering wheel may be at an angle.
Possible to continue the journey.
Steer with care!
Have the problem checked by the nearest BMW Service."

I did as what forumers recommended and so far so good.. Haven't appeared for 2 days already..
Reported to car dealer and he promised to have a look on this issue..
