740il e32 Conversion (need your suggestions)

Hi everyone, just a quick intro. My name is KGB, am mostly active on 4x4 forums and 4x4 events/competitions/jungle outings and everything else to do with offroading.Anyways, just got myself a 740il 1994 in reasonable condition. Engine and gearbox are great!!! But the road tax is around 6K+++ something I can't really justify in long run. Anyways, planning to do engine conversion sometime after CNY. Need to hear some suggestions. Initially, was planning to plug in 1jz or if i am very lucky, 1jz VVTI or might also consider 2jz. But not easy to get, so might end up with 1jz only. My question is: are there any other engines out there that i can consider? Of course, road tax has to be reasonable. What is most common conversion for 7 series out there? I am really new to BMW world, so will need all the info you can give. Thanks in advance. p.s. if anyone looking for auto gearbox or V8 engine, so let me know, it will be up for grabs very soon.

I had a brief drive in an E38 740iL that has a 3.0L 2J VVTI engine. Quite impressive actually. One of Albert's customer's car and he is maintaining it for him.
 
yeah, vvti would be good, have test driven one before, but on a different rig though. If only budget permits, would consider. But was quoted around 15K for 1jz conversion, which kinda left me with only one alternative, 1jz that is.

just curious to know, what is market rate for 1jz conversions on cars like 7 series?

Hi KGB,

You can also PM or see bmchai's thread..'My German Bastard'...he just converted his E32 to a 1JZ engine.I had a look at it when it was still in the workshop..pretty impressive..

BTW,if u are letting go of the V8 would it come with the gearbox as well? Very tempted to upgrade my E32 730 to 740 V8..:D

yes, the whole drive train will be sold, as there is no use for me to keep it anyways. Do PM me if you are interested. But be quick, as the car will be in workshop very very soon and you won't get a chance to test gbox.

BTW, i did go through "my german bastard" thread, great write up, but his car is slightly lighter than mine, being 740il i'd expect it to be one of the heaviest.

heheheheh sorry blackhowling, V8 is a V8, I'll be having tears rolling down taking it out, so unfair having to swap German V8 for some Jap 2.5

Anyways, whoever is interested, do let me know, we can schedule a test drive so that you can feel V8 engine grunt and smoothness of gbox.

I owned this car for about 2 months now, driving it daily, no issues at all, smooth as silk (but than again, i am used to driving a Suzuki Jimny on 35 Extreme Terrain tires, so" smoothness" is a relative term heheheh come and test la!!! )

Don't ask me how much i want to sell it, give an offer, i have no clue what its worth. For as long as i can offset some of the cost of conversion.

if only roadtax expensive matter, i think you can find someone who have 'jalan' and downgrade your roadtax from 4.0 to 3.0 without changing the engine... i think price will be 1/3 of convert to 1jz or 2jz

Yep, well aware of jalan's available, but no, road tax alone is not an issue. As i mentioned earlier, i am new to BMW world, so prefer to stick with what i know how to maintain. Jap all the way for me.

It seems that 1jz is temporary on hold for me, looking high and low for 2jz :rock:

Would appreciate any leads on reasonably priced 2jz halfcuts with reasonable mileage. Anyone?

Why do you want to swap the M60 V8 for a 4 cylinder. Why not get a non running E32 7er instead and then do the conversion. Save the 740i and do a 6 speed manual transmission conversion,I know rotax is very expansive, but trust me a V8 BMW is way better than a 4 cylinder VVTi.

swapping V8 for straight 6. upgrading horsepower from 260 to300+++

Plan was to get a condemned unit, but price tag on my running e32 was just too tempting to refuse, not sure if a non-running "version" can be purchased at same price, if can, let me know, i might be interested to get another unit.
 
Okey, i know its been a while, but i finally got my half cut. It is no longer 1jz. In the end, i've become greedy and decided to go ahead with 2jz instead hehehehe

Just came in this morning, hopefully in 1 to 2 weeks time should be able to go on hoist.

Once conversion is done, car will be sent for another conversion, so called LPG conversion. Unlike other LPG conversions, mine is suppose to run 100% on gas (anyways, that is what JPJ is gonna be told). In return, i should be eligible for 50% discount off my road tax (instead of normal 20% discount).

Idea is to run on LPG for long distance and in town. And petrol when the need for 350 horse power is required.

Lets see how this goes, will try and keep pictures coming once conversion takes place.
