hi, i m from jb n bought a 728i e38 1997 uk spec 3 months ago. i need some advice from the sifu...1. any good car mechanic n chop shop around jb area?2. my car meter reading n radio display are not function well. i really can't see them well. any advice?3. i only got 1 car key when i bought this car. any shop can make this kind of car key? i did check n they said i need to buy from bmw germany n cost around 1.5k.i m appreciate all the advice given later.thank you.regards,chang yin siang

Not a sifu but can share on some experience.

1. I think the JB members will respond and identify some good mechanic & chop shops in JB for you to chechk out.

2. This could be the cause

3. It's quite common in Malaysia to buy a used car and get only 1 key. Maybe it's a Malaysian style "Kia Su" attitude of car sellers

Basically the E38 key has 3 components

i. The starter Key
ii. The remote control to open/lock doors & booth lid
iii. The transponder to activate the EWS & start the car with the key

Based on my experience, this is what you can do to safe cost

i. You can get a local lock smith to cut a new starter key
ii. The typical lock smith cannot duplicate the remote control as they could not read or copy the set frequencies. Well at least mine couldn't do so.
iii. They also could not copy the transponder chip.

However I have done some search on ebay where such blank key, remote & transponder is available for sale. Instructions are provided to do your own setting. It will be cheaper than the 1.5K that you mentioned.

(I have not tried this but I think it will work) Cheapest method is to remove your transponder from your remote key and attached it very near to the key barrel in the car. Go to your local lock smith and cut a duplicate key. Then you will have two keys to start the car or open/lock doors & booth. The remote control key will be just one. If you lose that, then just instal those cheap local/Taiwan remote controls.
