Ok, first thing on my list is the gearbox. I think it's kaput. Won't shift gears when cold. What is the price range of 2nd hand unit? I have enquired regarding recond ones going for a whopping 4.5k incl installation!

Anyone knows of a place to get a used ZF 4HP22?
Me thinks mafia has one gearbox for sale?

Capkel, go for a 5 speed gearbox if you intend to change your engine.

The ZF 4hp-22 is not that reliable. If you dont intend to spend big $$$, then go for the Jatco gearbox (also 5 speed) and its damn cheap.

Rgds

Yeah the 4HP22 apprently are not the dogs bollocks when it comes to slushboxes....expensive to rebuild etc. I should know coz I rebuilt mine......

Dont buy recond.... get your existing unit rebuilt for RM3K .... like I said, not cheap, but at least you will know the box....

JATCO ....have heard of them..... part of Nissan group I think.... quality is there I suppose. If cheap perhaps better value for your needs

JATCO actually manufactures gearboxes for most Japanese auto manufacturers, not too sure if they are directly under Nissan, but I think Jatco stands for Japan Transmission Company or something like that. For the price of a Jatco gearbox, there is really nothing to complain about :)

what milage is on your car now? if you are thinking of changing the gearbox and spending more to do up the engine, you may consider dropping in the M50 which will be quite an improvement from the M20. but do know that part for M20's are still relatively cheap and easy to get. A finely tuned M20 can be really smooth, and quite as well.

best to join us for TT there are quite a number of E34 owners for you to compare notes with, stay away from the M30 guys if you want to maintain your car stock.... :nyehehe: :nyehehe: :D

JATCO gearboxes can be had for about RM1k each.. :D.. so when it gives, just get another one to replace.. hahahha

Jatco 5 speeds are also used on the cefiros....

maybe it wud be much cheaper and say you are buying it for a cefiro rather than a bmw.......

Teejay, I know the Jatco tranny's for BMWs are at rock bottom prices, if cheaper, its next to free hahaha

On the contrary, a friend just replaced his gearbox (nissan cefiro 3.0V6, cost him more than 2k)!!

Does the old inline-6 cefiro uses similar gearbox as per the e34? I suspect that could be a possibility :)

it was compared by a few junkyard guys, and conclusion they came up was that the cefiros used the same box as the e34/e36 which uses the jatco ones, same model, same shape, etc

maybe our junkyard king zoggee can clarify, some info he has invaluable......

and about your fishes......you like to smell, lick or eat.?.....hehehe
can't imagine the smell when it goes bad.......hehehe!!

I suppose if you put in a Jatco tranny, you will not be able to use the E-S-(1-2-3) selector anymore???

Wow, thanks for the wealth of information guys :D Really appreciate it.

Currently the car has done 330k kms. The slush box has been done up before according to the previous owner. I am trying to maintain the car with the M20. Maybe the Jatco would be a cheap alternative.

Where can I find one?

huh... whoa... you all so good one ah..???

Jatco for M20engine got meh...???

OK now I am looking for a long shaft. There's one for sale asking 1k. Too much?

Engine needs top overhaul.Wondering if it's more economical to plonk in a 2nd hand or just do it up. Problem with 2nd hand is, I don't know the cond of the engine. How much to do top overhaul?

Got to balance the budget

can consider to convert ur car to M50B25 since ur gearbox Kong......Engine need to overhaul......Convert to M50 engine is the best solution...Just my opinion....

Just came back from the chop shop.

They are able to transplant a M50B25 24V single Vanos with a Jatco tranny incl long shaft and rear diff for 10k. Also incl front and rear suspensions. Price includes workmanship and paperwork. What do you guys think?

There goes my "keep it original" idea :D

For 10K sound like a decent price. But you need to inspect the condition of the M50 motor. These things have internal parts that are expensive the fix if they do break!.

Get a quote for Jatco , long shaft fitted into your M20 first. But at 300K+ milage, I think the M20 probably has had it. Go with the M50 and make sure the wiring is done properly. Last thing you wanted is electrical problems when the mechanicals are sound. How many people encountered this before ?.

Then the German car becomes like a old British car with electrical gremlims crawling out at the most unusual time. Good luck.
