hi,i am driving a '97 328 E36. I bought it second hand in Jan this year. recently (last few weeks) I am experiencing lot of problem. latest is the transmission and car alarm.when i reach 110 km/h the transmission indicator light comes on and the gear does not shift down even when i reduce the speed. if I stop the car and start again it is ok. but as soon as i reach 110 km/h same thing happens.from some of the older threads it seems it is gearbox problem and is very expensive to fix. will it help if i change the transmission fluid?please help me diagnose the problem.thanks.

You're better off going to a gearbox specialist to diagnose. Eventually you'll need to see one so might as well get it over and done with.

I just overhauled my gearbox 2 weeks ago, total costs RM3100. Lucky no major damage. If gearbox telltale lights up, sure something might have drop off already. Try draining out the ATF oil and open up the two sumps and check to see if any debris fallen from it. Mine was a bit broken off from the spacer.

Thanks. My mechanic says it can be due to electronics problem or ATF. He will check today and confirm.
Recently I have fixed the air con system. For that they had to open up the whole dashboard and did some rewirings as well. So I think they left out something which is causing this problem.
If they cant fix the problem will go to different mechanic.

My mechanic said the ATF is very dirty and asked to change. After changing ATF now problem fixed.

There you go, glad ur problem solved. Normally when buying a 2nd hand car, it is best to change all the fluids(Engine oil/filter, ATF oil/filter, flush coolant and replace with new ones) especially those without any service history.

try to check on the torque coverter, i used to have the same problem too. cheers!

Fluids should be maintained and monitored very closely. They're cheap and they're your insurance for future problems, especially when living in a warm climate. I flushed and replaced my coolant and brake fluid every 2 years. I replaced my differential and trans fluid at about 48K and around around 96K... my car is due for another replacement now... kinda lazy lately. They're easy to do if you're handy with tools. I just replaced both the main and AC belt tensioners. The engine spins a lot quieter now. If you hear a little squeak or cricket noise under your hood when the engine is running ... chances are it could be your tensioner ... providing you've already replaced all the belts.

There are so much DIY info on the web. Check it out ... they will save you tons of money having to do it yourself.

today the transmission problem occured again. i was accelerating and as soon as the car reached 120+ the car jerked changed gear and the faulty transmission signal came up in the dashboard. after that when i slowed down the car the gear doesnt shift down.
but after i stop and start the car again its ok.

what could be the problem? this problem was fixed when i changed the trans. fluid but that was just a month back.

another problem is when i start the car it keeps on shaking. what could cause this.

Try and check for air leakage at the crankcase-ventilation/oil seperator, its a diaphragm valve that tends to break and cause air leak, and also the plastic housing tends to become brittle too. Check this first before jumping to idle control valve(may cause wrong diagnose for faulty ICV). Other than that check all air intake hoses no leak and check if AFM faulty.
