Hello! It was brought to my attention that when the E36 325 auto transmission downshifts during deceleration it is noticed that it has a jerky feeling and is not smooth. The 328 however does not have this problem. Does this have anything to do with age? I realize that the 328 is of course newer and may not have this problem as yet. Perhaps when it gets to the age of the 325's it may have this problem?I am contemplating to buy either a 325 or a 328 but I was told to stay away from the 325 because of the transmision. The downside of the 328 is of course the road tax and aluminium block (and therefore future mods are very restricted). If anyone care to comment please feel free voice your opinion. Please help! Thanks.

Im using E36 325 ... n so far none of the mentioned prob that im facing ... im damn happy with my ride

No, not the 328. I haven't heard of any problems with the 328 gearbox. I'm talking about the 325 gearbox.

dont be fooled the 325 or 328 runs on the same gm gbox, and believe me the 328 also jerks sometimes....been drivin it for more than 5 years already...
Well, that is great news for me. This should clear my doubts on this 325 gearbox issue.

Anyone else care to second what dvng has commented? Or other comments as well?

Thanks guys for all your input.

should be the same. It's the same gearbox.
The difference that you noticed is probably because the 328 gearbox is newer and also better maintained.

Do you have enough samples to come up with such conclusion? You can try my car. My gearbox has been overhauled though and is in pretty good condition. According to friend who bought the E36 new last time, my gearbox is even better than his when he got his car. Donno la true or not :p

True, true.... the same with my ex-E36. Gearbox was overhauled when I bought the car. Gearbox was smooth, both upshift and downshift.

korektion,
install/dismantle at M-Speed but the gearbox specialist is from somewhere else.

You may be right about the 328 GB being newer. I only heard about the "problem" through a friend and from his experience from owning one.

BTW, how was your GB before the overhaul? What was the problem which made you decide to overhaul it? Was it not up/down shifting smoothly? Or was it slipping?

Thanks for offering to let me test drive your car. But I don't have enough experience to know whether a GB is operating normally or not. It is only through a friend whom I got this information about the 325 GB being a problematic one and that I should stay away from it.

Thanks bro for your input. Really appreciate it.

Err... what do you mean by that? Did MSpeed not do a good job? Or do you mean they brought in someone from elsewhere to do the job there?

BTW, just out of curiousity, how much on the average does it cost to overhaul a GB?

no ... it was done at M-speed. but M-speed 'outsources' the actual overhaul job to another guy but done at the shop. M-speed will inspect, install, and test the gbox. There is a gearbox specialist that M-speed uses to overhaul the gearbox.

cost about RM3K+/-. Depends if you have to change your valvebody or not which is a rare item nowadays.

I overhauled mine because water was seeping through the gearbox body and there is some jerks and slipping.
