I am into the 3rd week of owning a 320i and I am trying to determine (more accurately) the fuel consumption.I have been driving from home to office - Shah Alam to Jalan Sultan Ismail area, est 37 kms one way. Taking Kesas and MEX highways to and fro. The iDrive shows the fuel consumption between 9.3 to 9.6L/100kms. Question :1. Is that the "normal" rate for you guys who are driving 320i here?2. If not what is your usual consumption rate?3. What's your best consumption rate so far and using what brand/type of fuel? (I take it that it will be long distance and speed demon kind of driving)FYI I just filled her up last night with Primax95 at RM96.76 and the odometer shows 452 kms. That works out to be 20.7 cents per km. But if I go according to the on board computer's rate of 9.6L/100km, it works out to be 18.24 cents per km. (Yes, I reset the journey computer together with odometer whenever I fill up the car, old habit. My old 2.0L car was doing 16 to 17 cents per km for city driving and down to 14 cents/km for long distance but old car is 200kgs lighter)So which one is more accurate or the reality is some where in between?Appreciate your comments and feedback.

hard to say sometimes..i suggest going to fuelly.com and plotting in the numbers to get a more accurate calculation, then you can compare with the idrive readings

I am also using a 320i new since Jan 12. Just within city and housing area getting about 11.8 lit/ 100km.
Not very Eco. My previous ride 407 evente, bigger and heavy getting 10lit / 100km, city use. On highway
It gets to 8 lit/100km.

Hope the 320i improves after 1st service.

Appreciate comments

If FC is crucial, why didn‘t u folks get the 320d instead? When I see road clear or gap to squeeze thru, i just hit DS mode and floor into the red line. My FC is between 10 to 13L/100km. Average about 11. As long it‘s below the 325 averages of 13L/100km. No worries on my machineries.. :4:

Orion, your distance sounds pretty much like me, from Kota Kemuning or Bukit Rimau area, I guess?
I am not sure what time you leave and come home, but I know Jln Sultan Ismail is a headache area, then kesas proton area, also the kesas & MEX joining part.

Anyway, I only trust my own calculation. Meaning that every refuel, I divide the total km by the actual litre pumped. I get around 9km/litre, old habit. Surprisingly, I find my the reading on our car computer tally with this. So, I would say the car computer is sort of accurate.

Your 452km/50.9l=8.9km/l, is about 11.2l/100km, which is similar to my 325 M sport. You must be either heavy foot or always get caught in traffic.(FYI, I always tekan when I leave toll booth. The rest can only crusie when I go to work, but there's chance, I cruise with higher speed) My experience is that if you don't reset your computer after every refuel, it will turn out to be a more accurate number. At least for my case, so I don't reset it now and I find them tally with my own calculation like I explained earlier.

You may wanna find out why or it's not fully run in yet? 3weeks with you and say you commute every day plus weekend drive, you should have 1500km on the odometer now? Not fully run in yet, I think. if your car is not brand new, is the maintenance carried out properly? tyre pressure? I had a chance to drive a 320i for a non m sport before for about 1 week, the FC is surprisingly better then my Mazda6 2.0! Clocking about 11-12km/litre, if I remember correctly. I can tell you this 320i has a very sweet handling in corners!

However, like bro Astroboy said, enjoy your car. No one says BMW is built for best FC, unless it's the 320D.

Take it easy! Life is too short!

Hi Vroom325,

Yes I stay in Kota Kemuning and I do take Kesas and MEX, exactly how you described it. I will then exit Kg. Pandan roundabout to come up at Sungei Wang Plaza.

I leave KK at about 7am in the morning when it is not too jam and I will usually reach Jalan Sultan Ismail at 7:35am on a good day. On a bad day I will reach at about 7:45am.

So what color is your 325? Mine is titanium silver. Do PM me and may be we can meet up for coffee in KK!

I am from a technical background - so when something new comes in, I would, very naturally compare it with the previous one. I made my career out of comparing and selecting technologies; so I just want to know the difference and learn from the experience and make better decisions in future. Not that I am hung up on the FC, just an ooooold habit. :)

And you are correct - my mileage is about 1.3K now and it is a new car with zero mileage when I got it. So it has not run in as yet.

Guess I will have to wait until 2000kms ... the car is doing fine so far.

Thank you all for your feedback and advice.

I've driven the 320i several times as courtesy cars, ~10l/100km sounds about right. I try not to rempit too much on the courtesy cars though :D

Update :

Took my UDM up to Ipoh over the weekend for a wedding dinner.

I pumped Primax95 right before i started the journey. Made the trip back and went to the same petrol station and used that very same pump to fill her up.

Full tank cost : RM69.10
Total mileage : 423kms
Total volume 36.367 litres

That works out to be RM0.163 per km.

Not bad.

But the journey computer reports 7.9L per 100kms.

Orion ... try to test at 100 kmh ... you can get as low as 7i/100 kms on the computer for highway. :)
