Schwepps, the smoke is white and no smell. Beside causes that you mentioned, another possibility could be the turbo which due unclean burning or water seep in.

Aiyoo.. why open the engine oil cap when engine is hot la? Yes, you should see vapor-liked fume, I believe its water vapor

Don't tell me u open the coolant reservoir as well when engine is hot?!!

.

It is nothing wrong to open coolant reservoir, but not water tank cap while engine is hot. :)

If it has no smell and your engine bay isn't very oily, then it's condensed steam. If it's only a small wisp when you open your oil filler cap or dipstick, and is not a plume and is not coming out of your exhaust as well, then it's the normal by-product of combustion and not due to a gasket leak of your coolant into your engine.

How bad is the vibration - is your whole car shaking or only the engine? If only the engine, then it's how you'd expect a diesel engine to behave. If you're still unsure about all this, send it to a dealer for a checkup.

A few other bits bro:
- You shouldn't open the oil filler or coolant caps or pull out the dipstick when the engine is running. Modern cars run at very high pressures.
- There are no longer acceleration strings (throttle cables?) in modern cars. It's all electronic and computerised controls. In fact in BMWs, there isn't even a butterfly throttle, as the throttle is controlled by the sophisticated valvetronics and double vanos variable valve lift and timing.
- Coolant reservoir and 'water tank' are referring to the same thing, ie the coolant reservoir.

HaHa.. finally, the dipstick is clear to everyone.....

RCBL, no mentioned. this is what the forum is for.

Anyone check whether there is smoke come out from the "dipstick" or engine oil cover ? Don't worry, you can open it while the engine is running. But, PLEASE do not floor your acceleration pedal or pull the acceleration string while "dipstick" or engine oil cover is open.

MrBig, I'm interested to know the expert who can do a good flush on engine. please share. :)

My dear friend ... you dont need an expert to do a engine flush.
1st)Just get an engine flush ... i recomend you to use Lubegard (USA)
2)put it in to the same cap where the engine oil is pour in to the engine....
3)start up the engine..let it run for a while.. no high revs
5(let it ideal for a good 5 min)
6)shut the engine off & your are ready to flush it out (detox) (1st round)
7)replace engine oil (best to use semi / fully diesel engine oil) & oil filter
8)Run for a thousand kilo or so to brake in to deep & stuburn sludge.
9)Repeat step 1 but run on full oil.
10)best to do an oil change every 8thousand or six months which every come 1st.

if i know where you are about i will recomend an bmw specialist near you.

Hope this will help

Cheers

Mat, since you haven't gotten any help from the diesel bros, let me try. The above indicates that it happens more when the engine is cold, not hot. It's very easy to confuse white with blue smoke, as anything not black seems to be white. So check precisely.

What's the condition of the smoke: white with diesel smell and hangs in the air (vapourised diesel) or white with no smell and dissipates (steam)? If the former, it could be: injector problems, timing problems, low engine compression or a faulty fuel pump. If the latter, it could be a blown head gasket, allowing water to seep into the engine. If it's blue smoke then it's burnt engine oil. Your mechanic said maybe burnt piston rings, so he suspects this, caused by blow-by.

Since your engine is vibrating, I would suspect misfiring, and any of the above can cause it. Your car should be under warranty and BSRI, so why not send it in to a dealer to check? Avoid the dealer who said "it's normal"

Friend Diesel engine mana boleh misfire ...... ! there are no sparkplugs mah ! lost of compression i believe lah !

Whoooooo! You're such a BIG expert! I'm so scared...

The most common cause of diesel engine misfire in this country of dirty diesel is clogged injectors. I've been owning and driving diesels probably longer than you've been shaving, maybe even longer.

Anyone who wants to DIY engine flushing, better not still be under warranty is all I'll say.
