Dear Gurus,Is it normal when the car is in Drive or Neutral and stopped for the engine sound to be noisy in a 318i ?Terry

2004 would be the 2.0 Valvetronic engine. I think your description of 'noisy' is rather vague...
Have you checked with your mechanic?

could be aircon bearing, alternator bearing or tensioner bearing.

They have a tendency to become noisy when the lifespan is near the end..

It should be changed during the "Inspection I or II" schedule.. BTW, change the belt also..

jarance, do u hv the list of part to be replace for "inspection 1or2' schedule?

i got the same problem with the same engine

Most of the BMW specialist shop should be able to tell or recommend what to change.

1. aircon bearing and tensioner bearing
2. fan belt
3. control bushing.
4. spark plugs
5. air filter
6. rubber hoses for coolant or radiator
7. expansion tanks
8. oil filter and oil
9. battery check
10. engine and gearbox mounting

Depending of the visual inspection, the shop will also recommend other parts to be changed.
