Dear All,I had problems with my alternator a few weeks ago. Mechanic at Segambut was unable to detect the problemd despite telling them that the red light came on before and after changing the battery (battery may not have been faulty at all) as the checked the voltage and reading was fine.Overhauled the alterneator at Sunway (got the shop name from the forum) and no more red light.A week after that, there is a weird kind of metal clashing sound (krak krak) when I start the car or durring idle. The RPM also drops at this point.Went back to mechanic and they failed to detect again (diagnostic showed nothing), saying that it is the air cond clutch noise engaging. But the noise and drop in RPM (with vibration and jerking) happend even when the air cond is off. They changed the air filter as it was dirty. The noise and jerking is getting to be more regular.I also read in the forum that overhauling the alternator may be disasterous if not done properly, especially due to the bearings.Any similar problems faced with others before? Any ideas what to do? Kindest regards

Forgive me, forgot to mention that at times my car seems heavy, like the break is being applied. At this point, the break pedal feels "hard" when pressed, the feeling you get when you press the brake pedal a few times when the engine is off.

Mechanic said that some "air pump" could be faulty but said no issue as working fine now!!!

fuuu ..:( sounds like a lot of problem bro and you are not getting the right advise I presume ....your krak krak sound only during starting and while idling??? When in motion (cruising and at odle speed) no krak krak sound??? :4:

ndsolo, what model is your ride?

your description of the sound is quite vague. Maybe you should record it and post it up in the youtube.

btw, which mechanic in M1 did the checking on your car?

Update:

Sent the car to my cousin's mechanic and he says the servo is out and the alternator was not overhauled properly. So servo and alternator need to be changed.

Costly affair again :(

Will update once I get back the car this Saturday.

Dear Sifus,

Really need help ah...please please help....wanna pengsan di...so much of problem lah Sifus....

My cousin's mechanic came back with the following:

Brake Shhover RM1,200 (don't what this is yet, I think it's servo)
Air Mass Sensor RM750
Rear Arm RM380
Engine Oil & Filter RM160 (don't know what brand yet)
Wheel Alignment RM60
Labour RM380

He told me that he had change the alternator and and also the servo (both half cut). Took the car back on Sunday and at first ok lah, no krak krak noise and was really smooth. Steering was senget though.

Then yesterday night the krak krak noise came back and the fuel meter was moving up and down and a bit of jerking. I thought haiyoyo, finish lah....RM3k for this bill, spent RM4k 2 months ago...what is going on lah!! Dah lah I bought the car in early May this year but non stop repairs!!

Then I looked at my bill closely and realised that there is no mention of alternator. Also if the servo is RM1,200, that should be the price of a new servo!!!!

I have the following questions, please please help me sifus:

a) He change the rear arm because 2 weeks ago I had sent my car for alignment and the chap pumped the camber too. There was some noise from the tyre (very light klok klok klok which is in line with the tyre speed, not all the time though). Also steering was pulling and car felt wobly. My cousin's mechanic told me that BMW camber should never be adjusted and that is why he changed the rear arm. Klok klok klok noise came back this morning and steering pulling again with the wobly feeling!!! Is the mechanic bullshitting me ah bros? I remember reading on this site about other forumers having their camber pumped with no issues wan.

b) When returning the car, mechanic also told me that my front asorbers ko di. Half cut will cost about RM100-RM150 and with spring and mounting about RM250 lah. Actually I had checked with Soon Eng's branch in Malaysia and they said that BOGE front springs are RM160 a piece. Why go for half cut when I can get brand new for same price?? Is BOGE good enuff and original for e46? Can I maintain the current springs and just change the front absorbers and the mounting? I recall that ICEMAN 13 had mentioned in an earlier post that he is yet to come across a dead spring. True ah bros? Pokai di ah, gotta budget if possible.

c) Is it normal for Air Mass Sensor to give way at 80,000km (car will be 9 years in September)? I do recall reading on this site that some forumers had cleaned the sensor instead using MAF cleaner. I kena katok again? Is RM750 price for new sensor?

Thanks very much for your patience in reading and please help with your kind advice if possible.

Hi ndsolo,

This cousin's mechanic sound wayy dodgy, I'm suggesting you find your own mechanic.

The brake servo, is it the same as the vacuum pump? I've changed the big black vacuum thing for about 700-800 for a new one.

a) "My cousin's mechanic told me that BMW camber should never be adjusted and that is why he changed the rear arm" Is the rear arm damaged that it was changed? My car camber was adjusted before, no problem.

b) Springs don't die or break just like how ICEMAN 13 put it. What is exactly the problem here springs or absorber.. The front absorber is much costlier if new.

c) MAF sensor is around that price or cheaper. This is not critical as the car can still run just not optimized.

Find another mechanic, seems like you're changing the wrong stuff.

seems like kene katok oredi bro....
sorry to hear your trouble.....
this is my sharing....poor guy like me must spend wisely....
and this is what i'll do....
first if the MAF really need to be change, its better to source for other option first as you might need to change it later...
try simple cleaning the MAF first, nothing to lose here as you still need to change if the MAF really broken...

if you're in the budget mode and the repair haven't done yet, it's better to stop it first as you're not aware what will come next...(my opinion only)

its always better to get 2nd opinion....
anyways, where do you live bro?

Hello aiditj (bro),

1) 2 components: servo (aka master pump) and vacuum pump. I honestly don't know if he means RM1,200 for servo and alternator. Any chance you know how much is a recon alternator?

2) Camber - the mechanic did not make sense lah bro...he said that because the camber was pumped, the arm have to change...he said that BMW spec all perfectly calibrated and cannot change...but don't make sense right?? For sure the camber will lari wan...haiyo!!!

3) Absorber - I followed the guide explained by a forumer to check for koyak absorbers...bouce end a few times and leave...if rebounce more than once means absorber koyak di...that happened with my front absorbers....how to check if spring koyak? Also BOGE absorber if going for RM160 a piece for the front...that is ok right?

4) Does the MAF actually give way at 80,000km (9year old)? He should have tried MAF spray to clean instead?

Bro was not happy with M1 for RM4k bill and could not diagnose problems...not happy with current mechanic for RM3k bill and like pay for nothing...no more cash to find another mechanic at the moment lah bro

seems like kene katok oredi bro....when does the katokking stop lah bro?? pocket now koyak di...dont mind if genuine repair lah, but repair and problem come back in 1 day, how can lah???
sorry to hear your trouble.....sob sob :( thanks for da empathy bro

1. Nope don't know how is a recon alternator

2. Spot on!

3. Springs rarely koyak, your car is still bouncing means springs are okay. If your springs are out then your car will literally fall because the car weight is supported by the springs. BOGE absorber for rm160 a piece for the front is too cheap. Somebody else please verify. Once I was quoted above 1K for all around absorber change.

4. Yes MAF can be cleansed.

It's okay, next time then.

Cheers

yup...around there...
be more patient bro....handle your car with care....
if u free, then can minum2 tomorrow...

what i learn from my car, always think twice...coz there might cheaper solution....
if japs car then no need worry la...

Bro, front absorber is RM160 each (RM320 for 2) and back absorber is RM300 each (RM600 for 2) so RM920 all in all...so sounds ok actually...need to change mounting as well? Is it ok to change the front absorbers 1st or better all 4 one short?

ndsolo, front absorber is more expensive than rear one, that's why I'm a little confused.. But if it is really RM160, go for it!

friday nite is ok if not take long....need to pamper family oso...hehe
i'll pm u my number later...

like bro aidilj said...if front rm160 only then its cheap enough...
